      Re: Blocking MSN messenger

Not sure of the Segam firewall rules a little more info on your setup would help, but why not just unistall it or if you use a firewall just block the program from accessing the net.

Failing that MSN can work it way around port blocking. The easiest way that I found to block MSN is a reg hack.

      1. In the registry, navigate to: \HKUR\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\

      2. Find the item named Server: messenger.hotmail.com;64.4.13.50:1863. Change this value to Null;0.0.0.0:0

      That should solve the problem.

Thanks, I am trying to block msn access on my child's computer without him knowing about it since he spends too much time on it. I am hoping to do this through the firewall on the router. I am not a computer expert and would be grateful if you could tell me how to get into "registry" and "navigate to: \HKUR\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\"

      Thanks again

      to get into registry

Start > Run > "regedit" > ok (without the "")

Well afaik, I never use registry.

      Re: Blocking MSN messenger

I would say if you are unsure of doing reg hacks then make sure you back up your registry first.

Also just one quick thing there are many programs out there that can access msn chat it is not just messenger so your son may find a work around.

      Re: Blocking MSN messenger

I think like most of us you are stuck with this problem. My daughter can spend several hours on MSN, facebook etc. Even if you block messenger, there is an easy to find web based version, (I know, I use it to beat our office firewall) If commercial firewalls can be beaten then the cut down home versions have no hope.

You can make it more difficult but no more than that.I wouldn't recommend altering the registry if you're unsure what you are doing. You can limit his time on line, perhaps that might be an easier option or at least a threat.

      Re: Blocking MSN messenger

Why not just uninstall it, set her up a user ID, and set her as a User, that way she will not be able to install software.

As Nigelh says, there are always ways around things.

      Re: Blocking MSN messenger

You might want to consider some commercial applications which can be set up to block all types of internet access. A couple which are recommended are -
      Internet Blocking,Block P2P,Block Internet,Web Filter,Email Filter,IM Filter
      and
Easily Block MSN Messenger using TerminatorX - avoid having to block MSN ports
Both cost a few pounds, but I don't know of any free program which really works.

      Re: Blocking MSN messenger

After doing some research on this there is a program that can stop chat programs from running and there are some good settings for it. IE: stopping anyone bypassing the software and so on.

This is going to cost you some money, But I think this program will do everything you need and you will not have to be to PC savy to use it. if you do a google search for ChatBlocker from explore anywhere.

I have run the trial version and it does what is says on the tin. Just make sure you follow all the instructions and you will not go wrong.
