      Greedy 2nd Computer

      Hello all,

I bought my son a new computer for Chrimbo which now hogs all of our bandwidth when he is playing WOW. It never used to do this with his old computer. It prevents me from browsing the internet, playing online and just about everything related to the internet does not work. When he does stop playing all goes back to normal.

Is there a way to limit what bandwidth he can use?

I DL at 1.5Mb and upload at 350Kb.

      Many thanks.

Unfortunately the standard Sky router is too basic to include Quality of Service (QoS) which is how you would ideally want to do this but there are various bits of software you can use to do this depending on your setup at a variety of costs.

Many are intended primarily for company networks (eg Bandwidth Manager for Windows - Bandwidth Controller at $30 US) but there are many others. A quick google for Bandwidth manager or Bandwidth Limiter will reveal all - I found this one which may be suitable for your application Bandwidth management and traffic shaper for Microsoft Windows but you need to try it and see.

Your son is likely to notice more lag so he may not thank you!
I should say that I don't know WOW - Others may know if it is possible to limit bandwidth in the WOW software setup but I couldn't find any reference to this in google so I assumed not.

I don't suppose swapping his PC for yours is an option?

How are both of these connected, wireless or wired as there maybe something odd with the way your home network is setup.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Adrian - I would say that the most likely explanation is that the old PC was limiting the requirement for bandwidth because it was slow. The new PC is faster and so the bottleneck is now the connection and not the PC. Only a guess of course.

Both computers are wired into my sky netgear router, I am port 1 and sons is port 2.

      Thanks for the replies, appreciated.

with them both being wired, that rules out any wireless. Swap computer's with him or look into as suggested a bandwidth limiter.
