      Just an update.

Ive been losing connection all night (router connected to test socket on master).

      Latest stats after reboot show:-

Connection Speed 13381 kbps 714 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 14 db
Noise Margin 3 db 5 db

I'm going to try the line test again now but I am worried that it won't be present when the engineer comes out and they ask me to fork out 150+!!! (the crackle is intermittant)

      I'll post my results asap

What's the weather like where you are?

I had exactly the same problem that you had, even if one does come and there is no crackle just tell them that it only happens in certain weather conditions.

I would suggest that you use the test facility but it normally is wrong. Every time I have had it fault it has reported the line to be perfectly fine. You could try it though the number is 0800 800 151 and enter you phone number. It will as k you to hang up then will call you back with the results.

Its cold!! But i've had this problem for months to be honest

Ive just done the quiet test again but heard crackle (with phone through another filter).

Plugged phone into test socket and rang again but it was perfect.

plugged filter back in and tried again but crackle had gone.

      rebooted and got

Connection Speed 13883 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 30 db 13 db
Noise Margin 3 db 16 db

I never had this problem with Pipex (only on 2 Meg then!). It seems to have gotten worse since sky imptoved bandwith in my area. When i first got sky the morecambe exchange was only cable of 5 meg I think, its obviously been improved in recent months.

I have another router somewhere. Is it worthwhile getting the password etc and trying the other router to see what stats that gives?

      Thanks for your help.

Re: Random loss of connection to internet

To be honest I would not bother with the router or microfilter's, all you need to do is plug the phone into the test socket and press any key and listen for a crackle. What you will find is after a while the crackle fades away. I had the problem for over 2 months before I got BT in. I would lift the phone and the crackle would be there then a few minutes later the line would be perfect. In the end it really did get bad. Bad microfilters can cause crackling, but if you are not using the filter and problem does remain then they are not to blame. Similarly to you I did a few times change filters thinking it way them.
The fluctuation in Noise margin sound right, I would have a 20db noise margin which would drop to 2db in 15 mins and loose connection.
It really does now sound like a BT voice fault.
