The guy asked why I was leaving so I told him and said they Throttle the connection during peak hours as it costs too much for Bandwidth.

I also spoke to BT via the Webchat they have and the women told me that all ISP's throttle the connection (ADSL) during peak hours including BT.
That's not really true what BT said, there is 2 things that happens, one is Traffic Shaping and the other is bandwidth Throttling.

Sky looks like it has been doing both and quite harshly yet other ISP's may only traffic shape and with a light touch giving people a whole lot better internet experience.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Must admit on BT I rarely lost any connection speed at all

The main problem is neither of these, it is capacity or lack of in this case.

Traffic shaping is not a bad thing, it allows things through quicker if they need it so things like VOIP and Gaming don't suffer when there is a bit of load on the network.

Throttling seems fair enough if you are trying to download the whole internet, its only right that you are limited to stop ruining things for other users.

Capacity, well there lies the problem, if capacity is at its peak then nothing will speed it up, traffic shaping and throttling do not even get a chance to do their thing which is actually meant to help.

Until capacity is increased, Connect will never be able to contend with some peoples desire for quick speeds and fast latency for gaming.

Maybe they are told to do it so anyone trying to use a lot of bandwidth will feel it and leave

Throttling seems fair enough if you are trying to download the whole internet,
But what about the ones that don`t they still get throttled.

I agree with that but in the near future that does not look like it is going to happen

That's the point, they are not getting throttled, not by the system that's setup to monitor usage anyway.

They (and everyone) are getting throttled due to lack of capacity and contention on the BT network, the reality is that the end result is the same but it is not the usage throttle that is doing it.

Sky will not increase capacity until it is financially viable to do so, they will want to at the least break even financially. I just wish they would put some controls that work on the network, that way at least customers get a chance.

Thats right it does not matter if you use 5Gbs 10Gbs 20Gbs or even 40Gbs a month It is happening to all they don`t seem to be grading the usage surely it should depend on the amount of usage connect Customers are using a month there has to be a tool Sky could use
but it is not the usage throttle that is doing it.
just wish they would put some controls that work on the network, that way at least customers get a chance.

Re: Sky Connect Broadband - Are you being slowed down?

      Bt performance test
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
      Your DSL connection rate: 4160 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1570 kbps
Usable but IP Profile 3000kbps was 3500kbps I will just have to wait and see if it goes back up. Hows every bodies speeds good I hope

Re: Sky Connect Broadband - Are you being slowed down?

Slower connections has been noticable for a few weeks now and seems to be getting worse.

      Not happy

      Broadband package: Sky Connect
      * Normal Speed: Around 5.5MB
      * Current throttled speed: 1.9mb
      * Average usage per day: upto 2 hours
      * What does this throttling affect? slow webpages, downloads etc

Hi have you tried doing a test on the BT Performance tester as Sky will ask you to run this test so if you have already some BT Performance test results you will be able to tell them the results which is better for you to keep them just copy and paste on this thread in your next post and thanks for the post I know this is a daft Question is there no LLU in Durham anyway hope things get better soon or even Sky saying they know and are in the process of dealing with the issue

Here is a good idea from Paulo
paulo de muchi Can I urge those still on connect to check the 'Order Broadband' page on Sky's website and keep an eye on it. I was on Connect, checked here everyday. For some reasons it flips back to saying 'you can only order Connect', in the afternoons, so the morning is the best time to run the check, hope it says 'Congratulations' and press the big red button.
IANTE good result that it is still 3510kbps 7.15pm your IP Profile for line is 4500kbps and Actual Through put achieved during the test 3510kbps that is a
difference of about 1mb from profile to actual correct me if I am wrong but is that not a lot
