      Speed has dropped

First of all I have to say that I am a complete noob with all this broadband/router jargon, I have been reading through the posts and cant get my head round most of it.

My problem is that I have been with Sky broadband for around 3 years now, up until about 2 months ago I always got around a 7meg download speed, then all of a sudden it has gone to about half that, I did email sky and they replied it was down to line degredation and nothing they could do, this doesnt ring true to me, why would it take 2 years plus for it to drop all of a sudden....

I would be very grateful if someone can point me in the direction I can take to try and solve this and get my speed back to 7 Meg

      Many thanks

      Andy

Reading between the lines, I guess you are talking about sync speed which your router displays?. Could you post your line stats from your router, and a few details of how you are connected (at the master? do you use wireless?) To avoid any confusion, could you also confirm that you are on Sky Max, as shown in your profile. Ta

      Re: Speed has dropped

Wow Impressed with the quick reply.... Just after I posted this I read a post on having phones connected to the master socket, I unplugged my phone to see if it made any difference and the speed increased to 5.6 meg!!! I cant have my phone unplugged all the time but interesting to see that it made a real difference.

Brian I can confirm I am Sky Max, I pay the 10 a month. I am connected from the master socket to the router then use a cable from the router that is run upstairs to my PC, I dont use the wireless facilty. Not sure how to get the stats, I accessed the router and got these

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5664 kbps 765 kbps
Line Attenuation 51.5 db 27.6 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 7.0 db

I will connect the phone again and reboot the router to see what happens.

Thanks again for the quick reply

      Andy

Can you remove the front face off the master socket to reveal the test socket behind? If so di it and get the stats from there.

Nothing at all wrong with those stats, and as you appear to be using a filter faceplate, with the router nice and close to the master socket, nothing wrong with your set-up either. Well done for not using wireless, it is very poor most of the time!. If you do a speed test on this site, what does it come up with? do you run Vista?

      Re: Speed has dropped

Hi Brian, thanks for coming back so quickly again.

      I am running XP SP2

I think I have managed to get my results from the speed test site on here, again bear with me if I am not doing it right...

The thing that is bugging me is I had a real stable 7 Meg download speed and cant understand why in the last couple of months it has dropped, before I tried messing with the landline phone it dropped to 3.5 Meg

Well on the face of it all looks o.k, You could try a new phone just to see if it is playing up, also have you done a quiet line test?
      (1) dial 17070 and select the option for a quiet line test. You should just here a low hiss, no crackle or pops.
      (2) If there is any crackle or lould noise, then report this to whoever you pay your line rental to, as a noisy line.

      Re: Speed has dropped

      Hi again Brian

I called that number and performed a quiet test, just a quiet hiss no pops or crackles, I have seen the words DLM being mentioned, is that some kind of limiting thing on speed? not entirely sure how it works.....

When I had the stable 7 Meg download speed, it was showing that on a speed test, I also was getting 7 Meg or just under when downloading stuff from sites that had good servers... Just recently it has been 4 Meg or sometimes even 3, and that is reflected on the speed tests too, I have rebooted the router a few times and that does seem to make some difference but no where near what I was getting, the plot thickens eh....

      Regards

      Andy
