      Slow Speed Confusion- Sky's Fault?

      Hi,

I am currently on Sky Max recieving around 4mb currently. I saw an offer for o2's 16mb internet service so I put my phone number down on their speed checker and apparently I should be receiving 13mb on my line if I signed up for them. Do you know why their speed is so much higher when I should be receiving the same speed from Sky's 16mb service.

      Here are my stats,

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4160 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.0 db 23.5 db
Noise Margin 8.0 db 13.0 db

Any help would be much appreciated.

Your speed is low (and it would be for any ISP) because your noise margin will not allow your line to sync at a higher speed.
How are you connected? at the master socket? Do you have any extension sockets?

I am currently connected at the master socket and do not have any extension sockets. Is my noise margin really that bad that I should only be receiving 4mb on a 16mb package?

Yes. If you have no other telephone wireing, the line just enters and you have only a single master socket, you could try a different filter, and check the line for excessive noise. Plug in a normal wired phone and dial a single digit to kill the dial tone. You should hear only a low hiss, no crackle or pops. Do you live in a flat?

No, I live in a house. Looking around the website I have seen people with my stats, some worse, get around 8mb on their lines. Is there any reason why mine is slower?

The problem is your noise margin, it is close to the target of 7db at your present speed. Unless this can be increased you are stuck. No ISP can increase this, however you could try and see if Sky will get Openreach to check the line for you. Did you check your line for noise?

Re: Slow Speed Confusion- Sky's Fault?

You do seem to have a low SNR which has been mentioned above.

      You could try the Testsocket.
With your attenuation you should be able to receive a bit more than 4mb.
Is the microfilter connected to the mastersocket first before any splitters, etc..?

Re: Slow Speed Confusion- Sky's Fault?

I tried it at the test socket and I am getting these stats now.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7264 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.0 db 23.5 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 14.0 db

Do you know how I can keep these stats up without keeping the faceplate off the master socket. Also when I use a broadband speed estimator it suggests that I should receive around 4.5mb but why am I able to receive 7mb then?

BT speed checker say i should get 2.5 and I'm sat here at 5.5Mbps...wouldn't believe it tbh...

Do you have any extension sockets or not? are there any wires attached to the faceplate (the bit you removed to get to the test socket.
