At the end of my tether...

For the past year maybe, we've been with sky and have achieved an average of 800kb/s, now I've ignored the fact that I could be getting much faster... but I've lived with it.

Now, these past couple weeks... I'm barely touching 300kb/s

And it gets even more annnoying when It seems I'm being capped from 5-11 at a speed of 30kb/s

So as you can tell, this aint too great...

I would try plugging into the test socket, but my phone box doesn't have one, so that aint happening.

A thoery I have Is that my long thin cable that comes from the little adsl box may be too long and that could be causing an interferance?

It's about 20 metres long as it connects to the router upstairs on the main computer which Is wired to mine and is used wirelessly with the two laptops in the house.

I've used this cable for as long as ive known so I don't know of any other speeds I could be getting with a shorter one..

      Anyway, here's my stats..

      Downstream Upstream

Connection Speed 7616 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 27.0 db 19.0 db
Noise Margin 8.8 db 25.0 db

And I've never even got CLOSE to 1MB Let-alone 7MB which would be amazing

      Any help would be appreciated!
      Thanks

Re: At the end of my teather...

You are connecting at 7.6 Mbps, your speed issues are probably due to BT's congested network. it would be worth connecting your router to your master socket with a short a lead as possible and seeing if you get another 0.5mbps.
Have you rang Sky to complain, it maybe that BT have you on the wrong profile.
You do appreciate that you are on a rebranded BT product and not Sky LLU?

Re: At the end of my teather...

Run speed tests using the following site :

Enter your phone number and when asked also enter the Mac address of the router with @SKYDSL
This test will need to be run 3 times with 3 hours apart ,
With a connection speed of 7616Kbps you should have a profile of 7000 Min ,
After running the test it will tell you your profile and the speed you are getting ,
If the profile is not what it should be call sky ,
Remember to leave the router in the master / test socket for 72 hours for the profile to change and ,

As for being capped from 5 - 11 easy stop downloading !.
Sky & BT are now capping folks for downloading more then 2 gig a day .

      What?!

      2GB Is nothing!

...Anyway, I just got off the phone with Sky.. and this guy insisted It was my 20M extension cable.. even though that cable is capable of 800kb/s and Im stuck with 300kb/s atm...

Its still telling me Sky is giving me 7.6MB/s... but I just don't know what else to do..

I just took the laptop downstairs and setup there with the small cable that came with and Im still getting the same speeds...

Anyway, I'll try that test thing now...

Re: At the end of my teather...

I just got a profile of 3000 kbps..

So doing some reading of others peoples problems on here... I've decided to get rid of the extension cable and go wireless, and I read that It can take up to 72 hours to synch or 'get used' to the wireless meaning I'd get full speed eventually?

This is just a theory of course and seems to make sense in my head, can anyone back me up here? On whether im just wasting my time or if i'm onto something...

Re: At the end of my teather...

2G/b day by day is more then enough for downloading ,

As for your profile then you will need to leave it any up to 72 hours for this to change ,
Again keep running the tests and if it does not get higher within 4 days then call sky again making sure you have changed the filters and remove the sky tv box from the line if its plugged in so that you can get passed tier 1 and up to cst for them to run there line tests and log a fault if needed ,

This is another reason why to run the tests ,
If it gets logged to BT then they are able to see what speeds you have been getting ,

Let us know how you get on .

Everyone on connect is being throttled in peak times - anything more than about 1.2GB/day will lead to you being throttled more than normal...we've been testing a few theories so will update once we get something concrete...

Well, I was thinking of signing up for Connect, but not if it's a throttled connection.

Re: At the end of my teather...

This is rediculous... I've been around 80kb/s all day...

I hope this is a 'calm before the storm' situation...

Would It be worth resetting the router?
