Sky stopping me connecting to SMTP provider?

I use my own domain name for email, using Mozilla Thurderbird as my email client. When Sky switched off the SMTP servers earlier this year I bought a domain name through gdaddy.com that came with SMTP and have been sending and receiving email through that since then.

A few days ago Thunderbird forgot who I was so I've had to re-set up the account. I've now downloaded the mail that was waiting for me - and sent ou a test email. This outgoing test failed, and the error message directed me to a page at The Spamhaus Project that gave me this message...

MY IP ADDRESS is listed on the Policy Block List (PBL)

Outbound Email Policy of Sky Broadband for this IP range:

It is the policy of Sky Broadband that email sent from this IP address should be sent out only via the dedicated outbound mail server for the Sky Broadband service.

Questions about this policy should be directed to abuse@sky.com. Configuration information for most Mail Clients in common use appears in the Sky Email section of the Sky Help Centre portal.
Does this mean that Sky are stopping me connecting to an SMTP service that I am subscribing to? What can I do?

Re: Sky stopping me connecting to SMTP provider?

I am not sure this is right. Only people that use Spamhaus lists will block your mail connections using Spamhaus's list of IPs.

I just checked - this is nothing to do with Sky.

Help! My IP address is on the PBL! What should I do?
The first thing to know is: THE PBL IS NOT A BLACKLIST. You are not blocked for spamming or for anything you have done. The PBL is simply a list of ALL of the world's dynamic broadband IP space, i.e: IP space normally assigned to broadband/ADSL customers. It is perfectly normal for dynamic IP addresses (DSL, DHCP, cable, dialup) to be listed on the PBL. In fact all dynamic IP addresses in the world should be on the PBL. Even static IPs which should not send mail may be listed in PBL.

The PBL does not prevent you sending email unless your email program is not authenticating properly when it connects to your ISP or company's mail server. This can happen if you have forgotten to turn on 'Authentication' or if you have switched 'Authentication' off by mistake.

If you are using a normal email program such as Outlook, Entourage, Thunderbird or Apple Mail and you are being blocked by a Spamhaus PBL listing when you try to send email, the reason is simply that YOU NEED TO TURN ON 'SMTP AUTHENTICATION' in your email program's account settings. That will solve the problem for you. See: How do I turn on SMTP Authentication?

I'm sure NR is right. I use my own domain and SMTP and SkyUser SMTP without a problem. However the comments about needing correct Authentication are valid and I suggest you check your Thunderbird settings carefully.

Re: Sky stopping me connecting to SMTP provider?

Cheers for the responses guys. I'm thinking that it's a bug or something in Thunderbird, because the settings appear to be right and require authentication. I think a reinstall is in order.

Re: Sky stopping me connecting to SMTP provider?

Right. Double and triple checked Thunderbird setting and it still throws up the same error message. Set up the account on Outlook Express too and got the same error message. So that would seem to narrow it down to Godaddy or Sky. I've submitted a support request for godaddy so we'll see what's next.
