      Seriously Regretting Sky Broadband

Hi, I moved ISP's to Sky from Virgin a couple of days ago and I am seriously regretting it. I get very poor signal for my computer when its not even 10 meters away, my Mac will connect to it, but it will not allow the internet to work, it is constantly dropping out and above all, I am paying for 16 mbps, was told I would receive 5.5 yet when I goto Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test it tells me I am not even receiving a quarter of a mb, as I am getting 238kbps!

So does anyone have any tips I could do with my router to increase the signal? I am at the end of my wits trying to make it maintain a signal!

And sorry to make such a moan for my first post.

      DSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 768 kbps 686 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.5 db 30.7 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 10.0 db

I see its better than the speed test told me, but still, paying for 16mbps, getting 768kbps

      Re: Seriously Regretting Sky Broadband

you're paying for UP TO 16Mbps, and with an attenuation of 50 you're looking - at best - 4-5Mbps...and that's with perfect setup...

as for wireless, ditch it as it's a poor excuse of a technology...

      Re: Seriously Regretting Sky Broadband

I need wireless though, I use it for my gaming, 2 laptops, and a desktop PC. Its impossible to have the PC next to my router. And I know I would never receive 16mb, the letter told me 5.5 but even then I doubted that.

      Thanks anyway.

cardinal sin number 2 - wireless and gaming...

you'll soon realise that this is the worst setup...always better to go ethernet or home plugs...wireless as a last resort...

try your test socket, assuming you have one, and repost stats...there's more to be done here yet...

      Re: Seriously Regretting Sky Broadband

Ok thanks for the speed info, but why is the signal so poor? Our neighbors networks are coming up with stronger signal than our sky router and their houses are further away than our router is.

What are homeplugs? Are they easy to use/install?

I had similar problems. In my case it turned out that culprits were Sky supplier microfilters. Luckily I had BT and Zoom filters. Download speed has gone from under 200 Kb to 1.3+ Mb.

I dont think homeplugs are wireless, tho there may be wireless versions available. The idea of homeplugs is to have a wired connection via your homes electrical wiring.
