Righto,Please read all of this before you start, as you will be disconnecting your phone line so you cannot get on-line and ask for help. Now where we go from here depends on how you feel about a bit of rewiring. To start with you will need some telecome jelly crimps (they are the things which connect the cables together) I think Run- it- direct do them.
To start with you need to find the incomming line (it will be the one which connects to white and orange of the cable which goes up stairs, and disconnect it. You should now have no dial tone at any socket.
Next, disconnect the blue and white/blue wires (which connect to the green and black wires or the cable to the socket up staris) and connect them to the incomming cable. (you should be able to match the colours, but this is not important if you cannot)
You should now have a dial tone at the downstars test socket and nowhere else. now check what your speeds are like.

thanks for the info, to be fair its way out of my league, if I were to call bt would they come out and look at it or is it not a problem for them to sort out, if so how much do you reckon it would cost? next thing would be, what would I say to get them out, cant really say ive been messing about with the cables and i dont like the way they look haha

also is there anywhere I can donate fo the site, the help I get here is always great and i would like to show my thanks

The best way to get BT out is if you have a problem with your phone (as opposed to broadband) You couls say that you have an intermitant noisy line, and when you get the Openreach tech there, explain about the wiring.

I don't think the Founders accept personal donations at the moment. If you would like to donate the Forum has a nominated charity which will accept your donation. There is a link in the left hand column.

If you are not confident it is probably better getting BT in, as Brian says tell them you are having intermittent problems. Don't mention Broadband over the phone or they will be reluctant to do anything. When the engineer arrives you can tell him and most will help, although fixing broadband problems is not in their remit. I would say your wiring has not been done to BT standards and it is in BT's interests to fix it. Whether they will charge or not is up to the engineer.

Re: just changed to sky max no speed increase?

      i rang bt

about GBP210 to come out for the 1st hour then 97 every hour after, maybe in the new year ill give this some consideration, its a lot of money and i suppose theres no gurentee that it will bring me any joy of more speed, i wish I could do it myself or find someone I know who can

one last question (thanks again for the help)
could I ask another company other than bt to do the work say an approaved bt engineer who might do it cheaper but to bt standards, Ive looked through the net for telecoms engineers but im not sure of the correct job title or company name to search for.

Re: just changed to sky max no speed increase?

If you lived close to the flat lands of Norfolk I would come and do it myself!. Only Openreach/BT techs are supposed to work on the network side of the wiring, but if you have a look in yellow pages for someone who does computer network wiring they may be able to help.

Re: just changed to sky max no speed increase?

Please note that a lot depends on your local exchange and on the speeds that it can deliver. The problem here could be that your local exchange cannot cope with such an increase and for this reason you are getting problems.

just in case anyone wants to know

I finally found someone (telecom engineer - not bt) to come and look at my line

seams everything is ok speed hasnt got any better he did disconnet the downstairs line and I checked my router and no difference.

im 20 lighter but least i know now I should be happy with what ive got considering the speed some other people are suffering with

      heres my stats agan anyways.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8355 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.0 db 18.7 db
Noise Margin 7.1 db 14.5 db

the guy said all the wiring is good and newish as houses go.

thanks everyone who has helped though this forum is always very helpful and easy to follow

      thanks
