      broadband max, speed halved?

Hi I just got sky broadband installed, and went active on wenesday,(monday today) for tthe first three days I was getting a 12meg connection, but ever since late on friday ive been connecting at 5/6 meg.

I havent changed anything, do sky still have an f.u.p. bcause i was told they havent?

any other reasons why my speed has dropped?

Sorry if its a noob question, I havent bothered posting any stats of checking the master socket, because I was happy with the 12meg connection, but I wondered if there was an explanation before I bothered phoning sky.

post stats from master socket (or test socket if you have one) aswell as stats from where you are now...

PLUS, DLM will be active (see your welcome letter)...

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

I will do the master socket when I can get a chance, Here are how the normal stats read.

      Router Statistics

      System Up Time: 00:48:19
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 48387 57698 0 11404 17952 00:46:30
      LAN 100M/Full 220 0 0 8 0 00:48:14
      WLAN 11M/54M 57627 48832 0 17704 11076 00:48:01

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7611 kbps 778 kbps
Line Attenuation 29 db 15 db
Noise Margin 18 db 9 db

I thought the dlm process would only vary speeds within about 1 meg, but Ive lost 6-7meg?

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

if you're not running in the master then the DLM code takes into account error count and lots of other variables...although the SNR is high (showing you are capped) it's done it for a reason...

So when you say I have been capped, is this the dlm process?

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

in a nutshell, yes...but it's done due to the line giving results to the DLM module which is in turn capping the line to compensate for this...probably due to noise off an extention, for example...

also, it runs for the first 10 days, after this Sky can then readjust the line once you've corrected setup at your end...

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

cheers for that, I will check the stats on the master socket and see what that reads like.
But I wont worry too much until the dlm calibration has finished.
The router has been rebooted a few times already, (wasnt aware of the dlm and needing it to be switched on) so this may have affected things.

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

quite possibly - i think Sky should have the bit about DLM on a BIG card with the router as opposed to a tiny paragraph at the bottom of the welcome letter...

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

yeah, looks a bit better...from what I can make out line is on adsl2+ and set at 8Mbps...call Sky and they should be able to get you back up into the teens again...
