1st of all call Sky and get them to trouble shoot.
2ndly for the 1st few days your routers speed would have fluctuated alot as Sky was establishing the best stable connection speed for your broadband, it could have decreased as the 12mbps may have been unstable? Just something to bare in mind. But I am sure Sky will be able to do something when you call them.

Remember if you are a Sky talk customer all calls to Sky are FREE

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

thanks for your reply, I just connected to the test socket and my new stats are:
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 14 34 0 0 0 0:01:27
      LAN 15 0 0 0 0 0:02:56
      WLAN 752 582 0 60 52 0:02:29
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9215 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.5 db 16.0 db
Noise Margin 12.5 db 15.5 db

do doesnt look like much differnce! apart from a better noise margin, but the speed hasnt increased so my question is do i leave the router and phone plugged into the test socket or just put it back to normal?

The increase in noise margin is most welcome. Have a read of the Filter and faceplate section and follow the instructions for disconnecting the ring line. Do this before you ring Sky or you will be back to square one when you move the router back.

Just give them a call tomorrow when you have a spare moment, They will be able to make adjustments to the noise margin which should see a rise in speed.

All Sky can do is reduce the speed of the line so that it is stable and operates with low errors. They cannot adjust the noise margin directly. What needs to happen here is that the reason why the noise margin is better at the test socket needs to be found and corrected

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

its not much greater at the test socket. We are able to run extensive checks in the technical department and we can influence the noise margins to directly improve the customers broadband speed.

uhhh, no we can't...SNR is related to sync speed - an uncapped line will connect the best it can at an SNR of around 7...we have no influence on an uncapped line's SNR...

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

An increase of nearly 3dB is large they are logrithmic, so this is almost double the margin

      Re: broadband max, speed halved?

great, so shall i leave the router plugged into the test socket until i ring sky tomorrow? or shall i just put the face plate back on for now and see if sky can sort out any problems over the phone?

Also when i unscrewed the faceplate the phone in another room was still working on the extension! is this down to the ring line? shall i try and disconnect that now before ringing sky?
