Moved 2 doors away, lost 6MB in speed

      Hi All,

      Hope someone can help me.

Ive had Sky connect for the last 6 months, synced at 8mb and recieved around 700k+ download speeds.

I moved house 3 weeks ago, and had to wait for the BT line to be live for 2 weeks before i could get sky to re-activate my broadband. I moved two doors away from my old house, about 30 metres. We are 400 metres from the local exchange.

I kept my old phone number. Sky activated my broadband Tuesday 2nd December, although i pluged my router in on Thursday and found my internet was working - synced at 8mb still, but getting a 2mb download rate.

Phoned Sky yesterday as i was thinking that as the line wasnt technically active it would go back to 8mb once it was re-activated - but it didnt.

Sky reckon that the line im on cant get anything more than a 2mb connection, but its the same cabling and same distance as the old house.

Im connected directly to the BT master socket (engineer plug, faceplate off). Im syncing at 8128000. The only usefull stat i can find on my router (Draytek Vigor ) is a SNR of 12.5 - i recall my Attentuation was around 6Db with a noise of about 10db when using the sky router.

From all my speed tests, i think the line is capped at around 2MB but Sky arent being that helpfull.

      Any ideas?

      regards

      David

Re: Moved 2 doors away, lost 6MB in speed

Seems your on the Connect package.
Doesn't seem you are on the Max package though for Connect and your line will be limited to 2mb.

Looks like your line will have to go through a regrade to allow you up to 8mb.
Call Sky and they will put it through for you.

As for the information given above it isn't correct. If you are not on the Max Package for Connect your line will not go through DLM.

Call sky, Get through to CST and they will log it off to BT for a Regrade.
After this leave your router on for the next 10 days to allow it to sync up at the best possible speeds.

Re: Moved 2 doors away, lost 6MB in speed

Just spoken to Sky CST department, that went through the old routine - Lines only capable of 2MB. They cant regrade me as im on BT connect. Need to wait 10 days anyhow before they will do anything, but theres nothing we can do anyhow as your line is only able to support 2mb.

I explained i need the line regraded, Ip Profile stuck at 2000 but as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Shall i just give up on sky, cancel whilst in my grace period and find a provider who will listen and help?

Just found the ariticle on trying to get the modem to sync slower bypassing the filter and putting some noise on the line - will give that a go.

Re: Moved 2 doors away, lost 6MB in speed

Oh well, cant get the router to Sync any lower, despite no adsl filter and dilaing fax machines / modems at the same time on the other lines. Any ideas on how to crap up the line a bit?

I did see another thread about adjusing the SNR but i dont have any options to do that on my Sagem or my old Vigor Draytek 2600.

      Thanks again for any help.

Re: Moved 2 doors away, lost 6MB in speed

Your Profile is set at 2000 at the moment, so that is the maximum the Sky test will see when checking your line. They are not lying to you, they just do not understand what they see.
Contrary to other advice you may have received, I would advise powering off your router for a few minutes every night during the 7 day training period. This will allow your router to re-sync with the exchange and hopefully increase your Profile. The fact that your stats are so good, an attenuation of 6dbs is almost unbelievable, means that you will eventually achieve the highest speed possible with the Connect product. It is just a case of waiting out the training period and if the result is still poor, BT will be able to adjust your line to give it's maximum potential. The fact that you have a new line also complicates things as even at the best of times, a new line can take several days to settle.
My advice is based on this article from Plusnet who are well versed in the use of BT's ADSLMax, which Sky use for their Connect service. You may benefit from reading this and the articles it links to.
