      Question Evening Slow Down

      Hi All,

This is my first post, to ask for someone to put me out of my misery!

Have just spent the best part of an hour being passed from pillar to post on the Sky "Technical" help line, I'm hoping you good people can help.

I'm on Sky Connect, and for the past four days at around 1830 my broadband speed drops down to almost the speed of a dial-up connection, then at around 2300 it magically springs back to life back to the normal expected speed.

Sky Tech have tried to tell me that it's just down to the heavy traffic, but I'm not buying this, unless you can tell me different.

I've done all the checks, router, filter etc, which they suggest (repeatedly !). The fact that I've been using the connection all day whilst working obvously suggests that the problem is not my end.

I've run trace route and ping test, and it comes up with massive packet losses. I've copied below the stats using Mossywell's great little app for you to have a look at. I hope you don't mind.

      Very Many thanks in advance.

It's Sky doing it. You've also got the fact that your traffic will go over the BT Centrals which are notorious for getting clogged up so you're in for a rough ride until Sky decide it's viable to unbundle your exchange. With the stats you've got, you'd easily get 16Mb.

      Re: Evening Slow Down

All i can really say it's happening across a lot of ISP's using BT equipment. Also if you use less the 1.2 gb per day your speeds will be better than most.

You will be surprised how much you use per day. Have a look at net monitor on my linky below, it does take your speeds a while to go back up if you have gone over that threshold, also depends on how much you have gone over.

Sorry for the bad news. I have learnt to work around it (in a way). If I want to hammer my connection I know for the next few days the connection is only good for medioca browsing.

Another thing Net monitor tells you your current speeds whilst there is data movement.

      Re: Evening Slow Down

Thanks for the info. At least I know I'm not going mad or having the senior moments !

If they're going to continue doing this, as I'm out of contract, I wonder if it's worth kicking them into touch and switch to BT ? Sky have been promising to unbundle and since I took it on 2 years ago.

      Grateful for any suggestions.

Oh yes, and amazingly it's just kicking back in fine. So it's proved you guys correct. Not that I doubted it for a second. Thanks again.

Have a look at Samknows Broadband - Comprehensive Broadband Information and see what providers are unbundled really.
