      Really bad speed issues with Sky BB Max

      Ok, so my Sky broadband max was activated on the 11th of November 2008, ever since then I've been having issues.

      Due to my distance from the telephone exchange they sent me a letter saying that I would get approximately 4Mb. That's fine, I didn't mind that speed.

      But now, I'm not even getting over 512Kb

      These are my stats from the router when I log on at 192.168.0.1;

      DownStream Connection Speed: 383
      UpStream Connection Speed: 412

      Line attenuation 52.5db / 27.6db
      Noise margin 9.4db / 22.0db

      I did speedtests on speedtest.net and broadbandspeedchecker

      Speedtest: 90ms ping
      Download: 330Kbps
      Upload: 205Kbps

      Broadbandspeedchecker:
      Download: 136Kbps
      Upload: 52Kbps

      those were tests were both done about 30 minutes ago.

      I have my router connected to the phone socket with a microfilter. (an ethernet cable to the router and the other thing goes to the sky HD box)

      Btw, I'm in Milton Keynes and I heard that it isn't the best place for broadband. So do you think that's also part of the problem?

      Could anybody please advise me on what to do next?

      btw, I apologize is if this is in the wrong section.

      Your distance from the exchange isn't the problem (your attenuation shows your line isn't terribly long) - the problem is with your line quality.

      Looking at your stats, your router is doing the best it can. You're not heavily capped so that means line noise.

      Have a look at the cabling and faceplate help forum for info on diagnosing and fixing line issues. Look for posts that talk about running a test using your test socket. Post back if you're confused about anything and someone will talk you through what you need to do.

      Fix the problem and you'll see a huge jump in speed

      Apart from trying the Test socket, which should be your first action, you might benefit by downloading and running TCPOptimiser or DrTCP. Links are below.

      Note - When downloading always select the Custom install or you will end up with stuff you don't want.

      Re: Really bad speed issues with Sky BB Max

      Ok, what I've done so far;

      I opened up the master socket with a screwdriver, inserted the microfilter into the test socket and then plugged the router into the microfilter.

      I Switched it on, logged on to the router and now stats are this;

      DownStream Connection Speed 378
      UpStream Connection Speed 412

      Line Attenuation 52.0 db / 27.4 db
      Noise Margin 9.9 db / 22.5 db

      What am I doing WRONG?

      Re: Really bad speed issues with Sky BB Max

      are there any other tel sockets on the line? If so did you lose dial tone on them while in the test socket? If possible try a new filter in the test socket in case this one is faulty.

      Re: Really bad speed issues with Sky BB Max

      After I unscrewed the panel on the master socket, I switched on the phone but there was no tone. Although, that's what I read would happen so I assume that's normal.

      btw, the line I used to connect the phone is connected to a different socket, not the master socket.

      I'll try to upload a couple of photos, hopefully it will give you a clearer picture of what's going on.

      Just to be sure on this one. With the test socket exposed, there should only be a dial tone at the test socket. All extensions (check any which you dont use as well as those you do) should have no dial tone.

      Yep, I just tested it now and that's what I got.

      Here is a picture of how it's connected (that was about 5 mins ago when I had only the router connected.)

      I apologize for the awful quality(camera phone) but hopefully it's clear enough.

      Yes thats o.k, but do you have any "soap on a rope" filters (the ones that have a short lead with a plug on the end) I only ask because the one in the photo does not appear to be fully plugged in as it fouls on the master plate.

      Re: Really bad speed issues with Sky BB Max

      No, I'm pretty sure I don't have any of those. The microfilters I'm using are the ones that came with the sky broadband "getting started" package.
