Broadband speed increases when the phone is in use at the same time?

      Hi all,

I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on my predicament.

I've been a Sky customer at my new house for nearly 6 months, (Sky Broadband "Mid") and ever since I moved here, the connection speeds have been poor (below 1meg). Since I'm paying for the "Mid" subscription, I was pretty annoyed at this for a while and was on the phone to Sky/BT most days trying to get it sorted. Unfortunately, despite the visit of a BT engineer and a few conversations with Sky's "Tier 3" Customer Support Team, they were unable to resolve the problem. Instead, they would do something their end that would increase my speed to about 5meg, but within a few minutes of hanging up the phone, the connection would drop and would reset to the slow speeds i have previously been experiencing.

In the end I became frustrated and decided to just settle for what I was getting. I didn't have time to be on the phone for hours on end every evening.

A few days ago however, I discovered by accident that my connection speeds shoot up when the phone (also provided by sky) is in use (ie, someone talking on the line). As soon as the phone is hung up, the connection drops and I'm back to where i started.

Does anyone know why this could be? I have had no luck with Google, or the search section of these forums. I haven't attempted to ring sky about it but I doubt they would be much use anyway.

How many telephone sockets are on your line, how many are in use and are they all filtered correctly?

Can you post your router stats, when you are on and off the phone. You may be suffering from a poor connection at a junction/cabinet somewhere, when the phone is in use it bridges the joint creating a better connection.

I had something similar a few years back, BT had a blast finding it

i have the exact same problem, but bt deny there is a fault on my line, all the openreach guy did was plug in his test phone and say it was all ok, i'm now on my second router because they thought this may be the problem and tier 3 is proving very hard to get too.. wish i'd stayed with bt for my line rental now..

these are my current stats but they vary wildy..
