Question Wonder if im being capped?

Hey guys, I hope you can help. Iíve had no problems for the past year with sky connect, internet has been excellent for Xbox live, downloads and general browsing.

But in the last few weeks mainly evenings, web sites are noticeably slower, YouTube videos wont load and my newsgroup downloads download at 30kbs instead of 700kbs. It's extremely annoying because Iím at work all day and the evenings are the only time really I can use the internet.

So my question is, am I being capped and how can I find out? Iíve checked my sky email and havenít received any warnings or anything about excessive downloads.

In the last 13 months Iíve downloaded 400gig of newsgroup files, but thatís not including Xbox live and general browsing. But surely thatís not a lot; itís mainly a few TV episodes every week, heroes, lost, prison break etc.

      Thanks

      Allan

Re: Wonder if im being capped?

firstly - 400GB?!?! not on Base then!! lol...baring in mind Connect has a 40GB limit (or about 1GB in a day before FUP applies)...

      secondly - stats please!!

      thirdly - setup (wired/wireless/extentions/etc)?

EDIT: missed the bit about being on Connect - you're another in the gang who are being throttled...probably for hitting usage caps (or just randomly like a lot of people)...

Re: Wonder if im being capped?

Hi m8, at first I didn’t think 400gb was that much over the 13 months but thinking about it now seems quite alot, 30gb a month, 1gb a day oops lol. It was mainly from when I first joined sky and found out about newsgroups, I don’t tend to download that much nowadays.

My connection atm is down 6848 kbps and up 448 kbps which is about average for me, sometimes I can get 7616 kbps after a router reboot. Would it not connect slower if I was being throttled?

I’m using my old Netgear dg834gt with firmware version V1.02.14, not sky one. It’s wired and my phone socket has the XTE-2005 faceplate.

      Thanks

      Allan

Re: Wonder if im being capped?

the sync speed isn't the important factor, or even the IP profile (which'd probably show 6000kbps - about right for your sync). BT/Sky can limit the throughput to the connection...

my connection was also hit but picked up again...has gone proper slow again tonight...and I download about 100MB a week if THAT!! so no idea what's causing my slow down...

What sort of times are you using it ? The throttling is usually between 5 - 11 and then fully off around mid-night

Re: Wonder if im being capped?

The internet gets used during the day by the family but that’s general browsing the downloading and Xbox live happens between 5-11. I’ll see if the speed picks up tonight after 11pm, if so I guess I’m stuck being capped for the time being.

      Thanks for the help guys

Re: Wonder if im being capped?

AFAIK Connect gets throttled around 5-10 or so.

It's BT that does it though, not sky.

You mean it's BT that does it though, for sky.

All BT is doing is keeping the total bandwidth used (aggregated across a number of customers) to the amount that Sky has bought. Sky could lift that amount but would have to pay more and so charge more. So yes, it may well be BT who physically does the throttling but at Sky's implicit request.
