      Exclamation Problems with my connections

Hi ive just joined the site after havin Sky broadband installed, and so far its not great to be honest.

Ive signed up for the Sky Max (16Mb, unlimited downloads) and been told my connection can only take up to 4Mb. Fair enough i thought as i would probably need the unlimited downloads with having XBL and i like to download TV programs over the net (Lost and Heroes if you would like to know ).

      Anyway the problem i have is;

My connection is suffering (this is an understatement!) on my PC. My xbox connection seems to be fine, so im not sure if this is a case of my xbox gobbling all the connection up?

Is there anyway i can split it evenly or even just give my PC some sort of decent connection for the missus to browse while i play?
Or is it a case of Xbox or PC?

      Thanks

      Re: Problems with my connections

      Ok here is my stats:

1st set of stats are from the living room.

2nd set are the master socket.

I know that because of the internal wiring that there could be a speed drop, but if i changed to my master socket would this solve the problem about the xbox and PC on the router together?

      Thanks.

      Re: Problems with my connections

The second stats clearly show a big increase in speed.

How confident are you to dabble with the wiring?

      Re: Problems with my connections

Well i am a 3rd year apprentice electrician, dont normally do phone cables but sorta know. The internal wiring was knackered when we moved in and the BT guy told me the colours that i needed so got the points working now, maybe its a loose connection in the point im using?

But is there anyway i can regulate how much of the connection goes to the xbox and how much goes to the PC? The connection im getting is good enough just it seems that the PC gets nothing when the xbox is connected.

      Thanks

      Re: Problems with my connections

You shouldn't need to regulate between the two. They should just both work.

If you are confident, open the Master Socket, and check the wiring going to your extension. You only really need pins 2 and 5 connected, which are normally, white/blue and blue/white.

You may have an orange one connected to pin 3. This is for the ringer on old style phones. If you are confident, try disconnecting the extra ones, apart from pins 2 and 5. In reality, this should hopefully give you the same speed on your extension. (Do not try this if you are unsure)

Or you could try just using the test socket and then the xbox to see if it does actually improve your connection / bandwidth issues.

According to the images, using the test socket, increased your connection by roughly 1.5mb which is a fair chunk of speed increase.

      Re: Problems with my connections

If you have a Test socket, behind the Master faceplate, try the stats there. You may find there is an even bigger jump.

Unfortunately the Sky routers do not support QoS, which you would need to split bandwidth, but as NR says, you should not need to.
