      Question Local Connection only?

Here's the deal, my neice was using her Acer 5315 series laptop wirelessly when the connection drops to local and she's been unable to get it back online since. My wife brought the laptop home and I tried to connect it to my router and add it to my network, taking care to add the MAC address to the trusted devices and emulate settings for my own laptop I'm using wirelessly right now. The laptop is connected to my router, and I can see it in my home network but it just gives the error "The computer is connected to SKY*****"... when I attenpt to connect using the Network and Sharing Center (operating system is Windows Vista Home SP1) "...but does not have access to the Internet". So I opened up a browser and it's unable to display a web page.

Also tried connecting it directly to the router to pick up IP settings, manually configured the connection using Sky's own static setup instructions to no avail. Have also removed the wireless and LAN adapters and reinstalled through device manager, have changed the cabling for the router, turned it off for a reset... and on, and on. Have just e-mailed Acer to see if there any known issues with their adapters and have asked Sky to contact me for a chat.

Took the laptop back to her home and tried the same, but the problem remains and their broadband is fine with a desktop PC plugged directly into the router and another laptop working fine wirelessly.

I'm thinking I've overlooked the obvious, and there are a few things I've tried that I've not mentioned here, but if anyone can chip in and save me wiping the laptop and starting over that would be great.

Has it got a software firewall? If so try disabling briefly?

      Re: Local Connection only?

On the laptop when trying to connect to your nieces WiFi do the following:-

Right click the Network icon in the Notification area
      Click Network and Sharing Center
Next to the WiFi connection click "View Status"
      Click the diagnose button.

That should then check to see what is going on with the connection.

Another thing you can try is disabling and re-enabling the WiFi card in the laptop.

Go to the Start menu and in the search type Device Manager and press enter.
(You will need administrators rights for this)
      Open the "Network Adapters" tree
      Find the WiFi card
      Right click and click "Disable".
      (Then the tree will refresh)
Then the Card will show up in the open tree with a red mark on the picture, simply right click and click "Enable".

Another option again would be to turn the wireless on and then off with the Wireless switch on the laptop itself (if there is one?)

Have a go at that and post back what you find

      Re: Local Connection only?

Now resolved, thank you for your responses. Everything was set up as it should be. Turns out she had applied some third-party firewall software but not completed the installation, took some digging but got there in the end.

      Regards,

      John
