      Re: Horrendous loss of speed.

Resurrecting this thread to see if anyone can advise me on why my Sky connection is pretty much unusable after about 5.30pm (yet perfect at other times).

I just (7.20pm) carried out the test described earlier in the thread and got this result:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
      Your DSL connection rate: 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1171 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP etc etc.

Not sure if that will mean anything to anyone but I'd really appreciate any help. Sky have been of no use whatsoever and I'm ready to change ISPs if it'll help.

      TIA.

      Re: Horrendous loss of speed.

...and now, at 11.15pm, it's back up to full speed! Most odd.

It's also, I forgot to say, very slow most of Saturdays and Sundays.

      Re: Horrendous loss of speed.

It's pretty much unusable because that's the time everybody comes home, switches on their PC and logs on to the internet. You are on rebranded BT broadband that is throttled back because Sky have only bought a certain amount of bandwidth from BT.

Any ISP that resells BT broadband will have a similar problem, though some may have bought more capacity.

If you move to an ISP that has its own equipment in the exchange (LLU) you may get better performance.

      Re: Horrendous loss of speed.

Thanks for the response Felix. I have asked Sky for a MAC code and am now looking around for a replacement ISP - I never had any problems with my previous one (Pipex). Is there any way of identifying which ISPs do have their own equipment?

      Re: Horrendous loss of speed.

Go to Samknows Broadband - Comprehensive Broadband Information and click on Exchange Search

Enter your phone number and it will tell you your exchange.

Click on the exchange name and it will tell you who has enabled that exchange for LLU

You will then have to check with the ISP concerned whether it has capacity for you.

      Best of luck.

      Re: Horrendous loss of speed.

If you are getting the discounted rate for Connect(5) it means your exchange is either upgraded or due to be. If you are, contact Sky and tell them you want moved asap, as you are not at all satisfied with the service you are receiving on Connect. If you are paying the full 17, get out as soon as you can. O2 is well recommended by some forum members, if they are available on your exchange.

      Re: Horrendous loss of speed.

I have checked through the Samknows site and Sky is enabled on my exchange, along with AOL, O2, C&W/Bulldog, Pipex, TalkTalk and Tiscali. Tom, yes, I am on the 5 Connect.

Would my best move be to ask Sky to move me or to try another ISP?

      Re: Horrendous loss of speed.

Phone Sky and bombard them with KANA forums until you get shifted. If they still refuse, tell them you are going elsewhere. Sky's upcoming increases for broadband have really put them in a very vulnerable position.
