      unable to connect wireless

      hi

i hope that someone can help me. I want to be able to use my laptop wireless but unless i have the yellow cable in the back and connect to the router then i cannot connect. if i take my laptop to my friends house then i can connect using their broadband?? My other laptop works so i guess its something to do with my actual laptop. I have phoned the help line but they could not help me....any ideas....when i try to connect it just says unable to connect to the network.

      thanks

      Re: unable to connect wireless

If it is actually detecting the network and can't connect, then it is probably a security key issue. First Disable the Security in the wireless settings of the router and see if it connects.

      Re: unable to connect wireless

You will have to set it up to use the security key shown in the router. The default WPA key consists of 8 capital letters and is shown in the router wireless setting and on the label on the router. Normally when you try to connect with the security enabled a box will pop up asking you for the key or password. Putting the key in there should allow you to connect. If this is not happening then you may be running the adapters software. Look in the bottom right hand tray for the wireless icon, right click this and select 'Let Windows Manage my connection'. When you do this a box will pop up where you can enter the key. Make sure you select to make this your prefered network connection.

You should really change the default security pass key, but get connected using it first, then you can change it.

Your friend, where you connected before, must have an unsecured network.

      Re: unable to connect wireless

Ummmm i dont have the let windows manage my connection? I went back to router and clicked back to where it was , then tried to reconnect ,it came up with box to enter my network key, which i did and then i got the following error message:

Network password needs to be 40 bits or 104 bits depending on your network configuration. this can be entered as 5 or 13 acsi characters or 10 to 26 hexadecimals characters???

It wont let me enter my 8 characters at all :-(

      Re: unable to connect wireless

Two ways you might see this, one is if you have not updated to Sp2 and the other is if you are trying to use a WPA key when the router is set for WEP. Have you updated?

      Re: unable to connect wireless

Are you running XP? If so right click on My Computer and select Properties. The Sp you have will be shown at the top of the first page.

If you are running Win2000, WAP is not natively supported, you will have to check if the adapter connection manager supports it.

      Vista supports WPA.

Check in the router wireless setting that WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) is selected.
