      Queries about faster broadband...

well this is the speed I have now:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 14335 kbps 765 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.0 db 18.6 db
Noise Margin 6.5 db 9.5 db

sorry i just had to show off LOL

im happy with sky. best move i ever made over a year ago from... uh... a very bad cable company... you may have heard of it

any way, i used to connect at around 9MB, then we eventually increased it to the speed above - really happy.

i do download alot but havent, thankfully, hit a warning note or anything. im grateful!

anyway, are there plans or maybe other services where the speed can be alot more? 20MB? maybe much higher? I know it depends on how far you are from the exchange and all that but something similar to cable?

just curious to know if there are plans, and what other technologies are available etc... etc...

well, i can safely assume you're not on Connect!!

and Max has NO limits - it's fully unlimited...

ADSL2+ cannot go over a theoretical 24Mbps - the next step is fibre...

The way Sky are investing in their BB offerings, I would never, ever, rule this out.

      thanks!

just curious (as I am bored right now..haha) is there a way to increase my speed even more close to 16MB?

im curious to know how for example Be can do up to 24MB when it depends on the phone line, exchange distance etc... because if thats the case then im sure sky should be the same?

there no point stretching the stability of a line when offering 16Mbps means lines that can take it are in their comfort zone...

chances are your line is already close to Max so just enjoy it - th extra speed won't actually benefit you...

      Re: Queries about faster broadband...

Sky use the same or similar kit to Be* technology wise, however in reality, very few people would ever achieve 24mb. I would guess that is why Sky advertise upto 16mb, as you are more likely to get upto 16mb than 24mb.

However saying that, o2 and Be (the same company) are in reality, Sky's main opposition as no other LLU provider is as tooled up so to speak. Maybe if they take a large chunk out of Sky's subscribers, Sky would unleash the faster speeds.

Unfortunately for myself, I would not gain anything speed wise by moving as I am at the mercy of BT's cabling and so faster speeds would never be possible. But... my uploads would increase theoretically if I went to o2 or Be* - but I would be paying more

If you can test the router in the test socket within the master socket, you may just get an increase.

well i am connected directly to the master socket as otherwise the line is "capped".... so ive left it like that which is fine

im happy just thought there maybe another way to make it faster and whatever other technologies may exist or if there are plans for faster broadband like the other bad cable company that unfortunately exists except the policy usage would be the same as sky...and similar or faster speeds

I doubt Virgin Media could ever afford to do what Sky have done, by announcing no limits, no traffic shaping etc

VM may have the faster headline advertised speeds, but they would appear to be rate limiting you if you abuse it. In layman's terms, allegedly, Sky can put more golf balls through a hosepipe per exchange, than VM can in the whole of their network.

I would rather be able to download 7mb (line speed) all day, then so many hours per day, as imposed by certain other ISP's - Not that I do, but you can see my point.
