Help with Sky Broadband connection dropping (2)

Admin note: posts 1-3 were removed from this thread and moved to here.

I have been having the same sort of problem over the last 5 nights.

Between 6pm and 11.30pm I get very slow access to the net if at all.

I can not ping any of the major website or even my own dedicated server.

During 11.30pm and 6pm speed is fine gettig 6 - 7 megs and no issues at all.

My speed has always been good at all times, it is just over the last 5 days at the exact same time frame that everything goes down.

I telephone sky all they said was try not to use it during peak time or phone back when the problem happens and we will go through the normal script.

      During 11.30pm to 6pm:

Connection Speed 7616 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.0 db 9.0 db
Noise Margin 12.2 db 22.0 db

      During 6pm to 11.30pm

This changes but is the average between this time.

Connection Speed 51277 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 10.0 db 5.0 db
Noise Margin 14.2 db 18.0 db

Even though it is saying the above, pages will not load, pings time out.

It is a normal BT face plate (non filtered) there is no difference in tests when master socket is used or not.

All conected via lan and the wireless is disabled.

I find it strange that it is just that time period and not any other time. I can not get max as they say it in not availible and yet all checks say I can, but that is another argument for another day. I am just wondering if anyone else is having a simular issue in Bournemouth or have had the same problem.

I don't use torrents or any P2P as I have my own seedbox so everything is downloaded via FTP ( the only reason I mention that is sky asked this morning if I was using a torrent client?)

Any guess I will see if it happens again tonight and give them a calll.

      I don't think so somehow.

There's two things going on here: the first is that, (presuming you copied and pasted those stats), your router is misreporting; the second is that you're on Connect.

With the former this could be an indication of a router fault or a line fault. With the latter, well, sorry to say but that's how it is.

Connect is a BT product resold by Sky when they don't have a LLU presence or capacity in your exchange. Connect is a highly contended and bandwidth limeted service and at peak times (e.g. 6pm to 11:30pm as you've found) many customers find the service deteriorates. However, your experience sounds extreme so you do need to contact Sky.

Lastly, if you have a problem, it's not too helpful to tack it on to/hijack another freshly started thread - start your own.

Re: Help with Sky Broadband connection dropping

I don't feel I hjacked the topic at all as I am having a simular problem. Strange responce, but I guess if want new topics to be started for the same or very simular problems all over the forum that is they way it is.

Those figures, yes 51277 was wrong 5127 should of been.

Strange that the router is reporting the wrong figure as I have tried 3 different routers from sky and all report the same.

If you say that is how it is! why should of it only just been the last 5 days. I know I am on connect but as said all reports say that I should be able to get LLU, but I guess the capacity must be full.

I will have to go with another company if it continues as I do most of my work during those times.

I can't see a single similarity other than you have a connection problem. I've offered advice which you don't appear to have read. I very clearly said that if those stats were right then your router was misreporting. You appear to be saying that they were just mistyped so that's not relevant. What is clear is that you have a line problem (ref the changing attenuation) or have you mistyped that too?

If you want to discuss it or want another opinion please use this new thread that I've created.

Ok if that is your choice, we shall have to agree to disagree on that.

It is ok now as fibercity (H2O Networks) have choosen us as one of the trials for their new 100mps systems Bournemouth and will be installed next week.

So I will live with the down time during the peek hours.

One thing I do find strange is that people are more than happy with the "live with it" idea in the UK still. If a company knows that their system is going to be in demand at certain times they should be putting the equipment and bandwidth to allow for this.

I lived in Singapore for 10 years and this sort of thing would just not be allowed in fact customers are encouraged to with-hold payment for poor service, thus forcing companies to offer the best service possible.

      But there you go.
