Wireless is nifty but a pain in the hole at times. It's something I wouldn't be 100% confident in to be honest.

The 2 Xp desktops; have they got wireless adapters or what?

As for the poorer wireless signal.. Is there anything near the Router like a cordless phone base, etc? Better yet what electrical/ metal objects are near the router.
An honest answer will help a lot.

I think responders are missing the key point: the router is in one room and wireless is OK when accessing from elsewhere in the house. It's only when the poster goes into the room where the router is kept that the wireless performance drops.

So yes, maybe someone else has a wireless network, and yes there may be other electrical devices near the router but the mystery is why they only impact when he is in the room. I wonder if he's carrying something like a mobile phone or an mp3 player, or maybe there is a fluorescent light in the room which gets turned on when in the room and is interfering?

The inability to connect the XP machines is probably unrelated and a different issue.

I had this problem several moons ago, the Cell size would move (a signal increase on the mobile) and knock out my wireless connection to various pieces of equipment, or the speed would decrease.

I never really found a cure for it, just used everything wired which solved it.

In the final analysis, going wired (Homeplugs or cable) may be the only solution.
