Angry Another slow down on connect

I seem to be experiancing a slow down on my internet. I joined sky a few weeks ago and everything was great in the running in stage. I was downloading at 700kbs and pages with pics loaded instantly and youtube vids loading really quickly. Now im downloading at 20kbs, youtube barely works and speedtests are around 400kbs when they were around 7000kbs when i first had sky. The router still shows its connected 8000kbs but everything has just slowed. This page took around 20 secs to load up. Im on connect and run wireless through a belkin usb dongle which has full signal strength. I cant see what has happened because nothing has changed. Ive tried resetting the router and turning it off for an hour as advised on sky help pages but still nothing. When i do the sky test on the router i get error 300 which seems to be a common thing. Any ideas what to do?

Try it with ethernet. If you get good speeds, which you should judging by your stat, then the problem is with your wireless connection. Just because the signal strength is high does not mean that the quality of the signal is high. There is a good chance you are now getting bad interference from a nearby network. If this is the case, you could try changing the channel on the router.

Re: Another slow down on connect

That's a nice line, can you get max on your exchange, you would get the full 16Mb. You would also remove any contention and exchange problems as you would no longer be using BT's kit.

As advised above, try a wired connection, wireless can be a pain to keep constant speeds as almost anything can interfere with it. If that's the problem it may be worth investing in a couple of homeplugs, that will save running cables.

Re: Another slow down on connect

Ill try changing the channel on the router and see if it helps. There does seem to be more wireless in my area now but i cant see what channels they are on. Im using windows to configure the wireless connection if it makes any difference. Unfortunatly max isnt in my area yet but they have done the two closest exchanges already so hopefully they will do mine soon. Im only a few hundred metres from the exchange by road, i could see it if it wasnt for a house in the way. I will try the wired connection again and see if it makes a difference, it could be the belkin dongle playing up. It didnt work on another computer, always kept dropping the connection but its been fine on mine upto now.I was all happy with sky bb when i was downloading at 700kbs, ive just downloaded a file at only 18kbs!!

Re: Another slow down on connect

The first thing I would do is try wired, that way if it fixes it you will know for sure you have a wireless problem and wouldn't be wasting your time changing channels etc.

You can get a program called netstumbler (I think that's it) which will do a search for all the networks you can see which may help you eliminate the channels being used, do a search in Google.

Re: Another slow down on connect

Ive just plugged it in through the ethernet cable and its still just as slow. speedtest.net shows 400kbs and files download around 19kbs still so it cant be the wireless.

Re: Another slow down on connect

Theres throttling and then theres absolutly killing it!! May aswell pay for a 1mb connection if they slow it down this much. They should not be allowed to slow it to dial up speed.
