Help Please, connection is simultaneously fast AND slow?!

      Hi everyone

I got Sky last winter and was downloading files at speeds of 1.5mbps/2mbps.

Then I left for university and came back in August to find maximum download speeds of 500kbps. Router's in the main phone socket, I tried two PC's (one vista, one xp, wired and wireless) and my x-box and ps3, but everything has significantly dropped speed. Webpages load slowly, same with youtube, and rapidshare.

At first I thought the line might be capped, because downloads were uniformly sticking at 500kbps, never going higher than 550. But then I tried a speedtest and got a download speed of 4958kbps?!! (pic below)

What's going on, is this a software issue? Nothing has changed between now and last winter, no new phone devices, same hardware, same settings. Spent 40 minutes with two tiers of sky support and they said the line looked fine on their end. Is the line fine? I don't know why the speed would drop across all 4 of my devices...

At the end of my wits, anyone have any idea? All help appreciated, thanks for reading, stats below, please let me know if you need any more info

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4576 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 47 db 12.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 13 db

Your profile says you are on Connect but your stats indicate Mid. Downloading at 1.5-2MBps would require a 16 Mb Max connection, are you sure about these speeds? A download speed of 4958kbps, which is not too terrible for your attenuation, would give you a maximum rate of about 600KB/ps, so you are not far from this.

Thanks for the replies, will using the test socket make a difference? I'll try it anyway and upload the stats tomorrow.

I can definitely see your point isitme, normally I wouldn't think much of it but I distinctly remember the 1mbps+ speed because I called my friends to boast about it! I clicked mid because I'm not sure what package I'm on, it's the tv+phone+broadband pack.

Do you think getting faster rates earlier was just a freak signal boost or something? Living in a new dev so maybe the builders switched connections for a while. If that's the case, I hope they switch 'em back!

And yet in another thread you are saying you aren't paying sky? How can you complain about your service if:
      A) You aren't fully sure of who is providing what to you
      B) You don't seem to be paying for it
      C) You haven't contacted Sky at all to get help with it?

Paul, I think he knows if he contacts Sky he will have no connection at all. His speed test says he is with Easynet, so Sky have slipped up somewhere. Right hand left hand problem again.

His parents should check their accounts to make sure they are not paying for Sky TV, which they may very well be.

Re: Help Please, connection is simultaneously fast AND slow?!

Hence my suggestion to log into mysky if possible, at least that way they can see what is happening, downside to this is that they may not have been sent user name details if the order process broke down. Either way the OP should not be complaining until he either checks what is going on, gives us his physical setup so we can check its not to blame, posts Stats and gives Sky the oppurtunity to put it right if needed
