      Slow connection only at night

      Hi all,

      Having gone through the forum, I noticed some users have similar problem to me but there was no resolution...

      Anyway, I am experiencing slow connections only at night for my Sky Connect 8meg package. This problem existed from day one (late July 2008), when my day time download is around 7-8 meg, but my night time download is only 300-500k.

      I have stayed on calls with Sky in numerous occasions, have tried all the recommendations from Sky, but the problem persists still now.

      I want to ask if there are anyone with similar problem but actually had the problem resolved by Sky. Could you shed some light please, so I when I speak to Sky technical/customer service I can point them to the right direction rather than get told to change the micro filter again?

      Do you by any chance download a lot?

      It is possible that its:

      • Congestion at the exchange (as you are on Connect)
      • An external source causing the slow down
      • You are being rate limited for excessive usage


      Post your stats just out of curiosity.

      Hi, thanks for the reply.

      No, I don't download alot, the most downloads I do are pod casts, watching youtube etc. Besides I am with Sky only since July, and this slow download speed started at the same time. So I dont think its because I have been limited for excess useage, but probably for some other reason.

      As for my exchange....I move from one block of flat to another within 100m apart, and both properties are connected to the same exchange (Poplar, London). At the old place, I had 4meg constant day/night with Tiscali. However, with Sky, I am on 6meg day time, but 300k night time (last night went down to 56k).....I can't believe that there'd be so many people at night using Sky's bandwidth simutaneously and slowing down the connection to about 5% of the capacity......does it mean that there are 95% of other sky users experiencing same problem at my exchange?

      Anyway, having spoken to Sky again tonight, on hold for 80mins and still no solution.....was asked to hang up and someone from the technical team will call me back in 72 hours.....never happened over the last 2 months, I doubt that I will get the call.......

      Really thinking of change ISP now.....this operator tonight really wound me up........

      Here is my stats:

      Does your drop in speed come at the same time each night?

      I had a similar problem with a previous isp. We eventually found the problem coincided with the street lights going off and coming back on again. Our line ran close to a street light that was faulty. Once we discovered that we notified the council and the problem disappeared when they fixed it.

      Just a thought - I see from your stats that you have wireless active and presumably you use it? It could be that you're experiencing wireless interference either from a neighbour's router or some electrical equipment you or they use in the evenings (video senders/baby alarms etc). Just a long shot but a wired comparison would be interesting.

      One other thing: always test using two or more (decent) speedtest servers e.g. Skyusers and Namesco. I've found ThinkBroadband/ADSLguide's to be occasionally very poor.

      Right, chatted with SKY for the last two occasions, unfortunately the problem still not been resolved.......got another call now from SKY again, said this had been escalated, and asked me to wait for a call back in 10 min while he check the records/notes......hope he does call back soon......

      anyway, it is now Sunday night at 18:39, just did two tests on two server:

      Download Speed: 390 kbps (48.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
      Upload Speed: 375 kbps (46.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

      Will keep this thread alive, and will do test with cabled connection........

      If it's not a wireless issue causing the speed drop then it's the Connect package I'm afraid.
