Any ideas on what I should do to improve speed ?

      Hi All,

I have just switched to Sky+, telephone & broadband mid. I had been with BT for my broadband and had always been able to get download speeds in the region of 3mbps.

I was of the opinion that the 8meg Sky package would be the same as my line can only support 3.5/4.0mbps. However over the last 2 weeks I have been monitoring it and my speed with Sky is just 1 to 2 mbps (Most of the time its nearer 1mbps)

Does this kind of drop off in speed sound about right to others that have switched to Sky ?

Is the Sky contention ratio realy bad, leading to poor download speeds ?

Would my speed improve if I upgraded to the Max package ?

I tried to downgrade to the free package, but need to wait 12 months

Thanks in advance for good and bad comments........

Can you post your router stats.

Also are you connecting via wireless, if so try a wired connection and see if it's any better.

I will post the router stats tonight when I am at home again.

Does the Sky router differ from the Netgear wireless unit I was using before ?

Old Netgear Router, which I was using with BT:-

NetGear DG834G v2 ADSL 54 Mbps Wireless-G Modem Router on eBay, also Wireless Routers Access Points, Wireless Networking, Networking, Computing (end time 19-Sep-08 21:57:06 BST)

      This is the Sky Router:-

NETGEAR Sky Broadband Wireless Router on eBay, also Netgear, Wired Routers, Networking, Computing (end time 20-Sep-08 15:59:22 BST)

On the contrary, most find at least a small increase.

Is the Sky contention ratio realy bad, leading to poor download speeds ?
Unlike BT, contention has little or no effect on Sky and there is no throttling.

Would my speed improve if I upgraded to the Max package ?
If you only got 3/4mbs with BT, upgrading would not improve your speed.

Sky's system requires a 'cleaner' line than BTs, so any faults that are present will be magnified. Post your stats from your normal router position, then from the Test socket for comparison.

You are better getting you connection set up properly with the Sky router, later you may want to try another one. I understand that the Sky router is equal to a Ver 3, so in theory it should be better than a V 2.

Broadband Speed Checker - THE UK's No.1 Broadband Speed Test

      The above site says:-

      1208kbps
28kbps @ Home with Sky on Mid package

@ Home with BT, the same site reported speeds of 3000kbps

@ My workplace today, the same site reported 5000kbps

Are you connected into the master socket, we could do with seeing the stats from the test socket behind the faceplate.

If your going to do speedtests, wireless may really mess with the results, try wired, your router shows it is connecting to the exchange at over 2Mb

Take your stats from the test socket and post them. It does not matter if you are wired or wireless for this.

Re: Any ideas on what I should do to improve speed ?

Wired connection the speed has improved to 1896kbps on speedtest site.

      Wired stats:-

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 40462 57097 0 101 972 19:16:35
      LAN 100M/Full 16179 7836 0 127 11 35:13:17
      WLAN 11M/54M 92635 70170 0 762 92 35:13:04
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2240 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 55 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 8 db 14 db

The router is plugged into a single extension from the master socket. The extension comes from the rear of the master socket and is hard wired and cannot be moved.

The only other telephone devices plugged in are the Sky box and 1 telephone.

I will not try, one last test with the Sky box disconnected aswell as phone........

      As above^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

You can get your stats via wireless as it will not make any difference but running speedtests may show poor results if you have interference on the wireless link.
