      Frequent Disconnections with Sky BB

      Hi there,

I'm a newbie here, I recently signed up to Sky Broadband but I'm experiencing problems with disconnections. I was wondering if someone could take a look at my router stats to see if there's anything I can do to rectify this.

Connection Speed 5152 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 35 db 10 db

Hi,try rebooting your router.as your noise margin seems to low.
Ask Saturday ( Moderator ) to have a look.

Yep - as psu300 says, your noise margin is a problem, or more accurately a symptom of an underlying problem. The router will usually sync at reboot to 6.9db and then vary by a couple of db through the day as background noise levels change. Yours has dropped too low.

On a good connection (i.e. an inherently low noise line) a smallish swing is not a problem as the current firmwares cope with this quite well. On noisy lines however, not only is the noise margin swing more pronounced, but the router needs to maintain a large noise margin to hold a connection.

You have a noisy line as shown by the large noise margin swing (of at least 3.9db) but more clearly because of your low sync for your attenuation. As you're on Mid you should be getting the full 8096kbps and have a noise margin of 10db+. Rebooting the router when the noise margin drops may help reduce the disconnections (at the expense of an even lower sync) but it would be better to try and fix the underlying problem.

Have a look at the cabling and faceplate help forum for info on diagnosing and fixing line problems.

Re: Frequent Disconnections with Sky BB

Something not quite right there. Low downstream sync for your attenuation and odd upstream sync. Looks like a wiring problem.

Your attenuation would support something around 11-13meg (depending whether that attenuation is G.DMT or ADSL2+). Your low upstream would point to a possible filter problem as this tends to suffer more obviously if the ADSL signal is getting any sort of bleed through from the voice side.

What stats do you get using just your test socket (if you have one) and nothing else connected?

Re: Frequent Disconnections with Sky BB

Before i contacted sky i connected to the test socket and the results were the about the same.
I dont know if this infor will have any bearing on this, but here goes,
I have four wires coming in to my telephone. White, Orange, Black, Green. The Black and the Green are not connected, just the Orange and White.I do not have any extensions. But, the telephone socket is situated alongside my Tv,Sky Box,Dvd Recorder.I cannot move them,as the Better Half ? likes the living room that way.

You will only be using 2 wires from the incoming connection, the other 2 would only be used if you had a second line coming in.

If you have no extensions wired into the Master socket, there should be little if any difference between the faceplate and the test socket. Just make sure, if you have a lot plugged into the main socket that the filter is plugged in first, then every thing is plugged into that. In other words, if you are using a splitter, plug it into the filter and not vice-versa.

Swap with a different filter, unplug the telephone and reboot the router - what are your stats?
