      g.dmt or adsl2+

I have just recently got sky broadband max (up to 16mb). I have noticed that the speed the router reports it is connecting to is 7668k (upload is 768k). My line attenuation is 20db (my exchange is about 700 meters away!) and my noise is 7db. I have only had sky broadband for a few days but after reading through the forums, im sure i can get way more in terms of speed than what im getting. Any help please?

Your noise margin suggests that you are connecting almost as fast as you can, but if your attenuation is 20dbs, you should get very close to the maximum speed. This suggests a wiring problem. Plug into your TEST socket and take your stats from there. Post them here for further help.

ok so after having just used the test socket with the microfilter, it seems there is a worrying problem with the internal wiring, stats are as follows without the faceplate....

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 16379 kbps 760 kbps
Line Attenuation 19 db 4 db
Noise Margin 13 db 18 db

So the answer is get my landlord in to sort the internal wiring?

It would seem that your speed might have improved and you have a nice high noise margin, which is a good thing, at the moment you are connecting at the maximum speed downstream anyway.

      Re: g.dmt or adsl2+

That is excellent, your stats could not be better. Have a look in the Master socket and see if there is a wire connected to Terminal 3 on the back of the face plate. If there is gently prize it off and tuck it out of the way. This is the ring wire and is not required when you are using a modern phone or ADSL filters. In fact the only wires you need connected to the backplate are on terminals 2 and 5, so you can safely remove any others. After you have done that, try the stats again in the original position.

Make sure that everything that is connected to the phone line is running through a filter. This includes all phones and the Sky digibox, which is often forgotten.

An ADSL filtered faceplate with the router plugged directly into it would solve all your problems, but it is not always possible to have the router beside the Master socket. If this is so in your case, then you could consider a longer RJ11 cable to connect the router to the phone. Good quality cable can be up to 15Ms without any noticeable drop in efficiency.

      Re: g.dmt or adsl2+

There is absolutley no wires going into the faceplate, im guessing there should be yes? there is some loose wires at the back of the master socket that arent plugged into anything....

Do you have other extensions in your house? If you have, they are incorrectly wired as they should be fixed to the back of the faceplate.
