no http access after a few hours of inactivity

      Hi

senario is, i leave the pc downloading off a newsgroup for a few hours, and when i return, the download is still going strong, but i can no longer access any web pages. If i reboot the pc (leaving the outer), then all is well again. The only thing i could think of was the idle time out thing in the router, but that is set to zero (no timeout). The thing is, the same thing is happening to a mate of mine, only he is with Bt, and has a Bt homehub. We are both using XP, however, he CAN access web sites at that time, with his wireless laptop, which has Vista installed.

Could it be a setting in Xp on both our pc's?.

      joe

Are you sure you aren't flooding your upstream?

No, nothing else running, other than the newsgroup download, which can quite happily co-esist with web browsing, if i go back to it a shorter time later.etc.

The download may be flooding the stream, have you got the upload/ download throttled at all?

I think you may be exceeding the 'maximum connections' limit imposed by MS to try to stop infections being spread. Have a look at this article and follow the instructions
CFDan.com - Setting IIS Maximum Connections To More Than 10

Note - When downloading always select the Custom install or you will end up with stuff you don't want.

      Hi

It only happens if left unattended for a few hours. I'm browsing and NG downloading right now.

Re: no http access after a few hours of inactivity

What may be happening is that when you are browsing it is OK, but when you leave it for a while, your available connections are taken up by your NG download. When you want to return to browsing there are no connections available.

Not suire, as i'm using 10 connections for the NG right now, and still on here as well. Unless it fools MS somehow, in this way.

Here is a patch that does it with a few clicks -
      www.LvlLord.de - Tipps, Tricks & Utilities - News

Have a look at the Tools page and FAQs. It is up to you whether you want to try it or not, it may be worth the few minutes it will take.
