      Drop out problem

Hi all, I think I posted this in the wrong section, sorry, so Iv'e just copied and pasted what I wrote here below :-

      Hi there,

I'm new to the forums and to Sky LLU MID and have read through a lot if this post but not all so I'm sorry if this has alreasy been answered.

I changed from (crappy IMO) BT to Sky LLU MID and Iv'e been having a few drop out issues, disconnects and reconnects.

I'm assuming it is to do with my SNR

At the moment these are my Netgear DG934G stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4992 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 51 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 8 db 13 db

      These I think look normal

      These below I don't

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5344 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 51 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 2147483647 db 13 db

I see my DS NM fluctuate quite a bit from around 12db right down to 0db and then 2147483647db

Is there anything I can do to make it stay at around the 6 - 7 db mark to keep my connectuion reliable ?

Again, sorry if this has already been answered

That means that the noise margin has dropped to a negative value (which isn't actually possible) so the router throws a reporting wobbly.

A massively dropping noise margin indicates a line fault. Most often this is a problem with the home wiring rather than the BT line. Using a crappy extension/splitter?

See the cabling and faceplate help forum for info on diagnosing and fixing line problems.

      Re: Drop out problem

Thanks Saturday but my house wiring can be totally rulled out as:

      1) I have an ADSL Nation face plate
      2) no other internal wiring/extensions
      3) nothing, not even my phone or sky boxes plugged in to it
      4) Router plugged directly into the ADSL Nations face plate

      Re: Drop out problem

It looks like your external line has a fault. Can you hear any noise on the phone. Dial 1 digit and listen, it should be very quiet with no snaps crackles or pops. If you line is clear there may not be much more you can do than ask Sky to check your line. They may have to cap your speed to stabilise the line. If you can hear noises on your line, phone BT or your rental provider, and report a noisy voice line. Don't mention broadband or they are likely to ignore it.

You're probably right but to be sure try a connection using the test socket inside the ADSLnation faceplate - if possible with a different router cable. There's a small possibility that you have a dodgy cable or a loose connection to the faceplate.

If that gives the same issue then you can be pretty confident that it's the BT line.

      Re: Drop out problem

There is also a slight chance that the router is faulty.
