download speed is always 40KB/s (320kb/s)

      Hi,

I am on the 5 an month "mid" package with a sagem modem and using an imac computer (wireless is shared with a laptop, wii and iphone).

I have been on Sky broadband since January.

For the first few months everything was fine and nice and fast. But for the last 3 Months My download speed is a constant 40KB/s max.

I use the internet a lot for work but I rarely download large files (maybe 2-5GB *slowly* a month using torrents), I don't game and I doubt very much I'm going over the 40GB a month limit.

I am using a wired network connection at the moment (just incase it improves things - as before I was using wireless) on my mac. If I restart the router, it makes no difference.

Am I capped? Will moving to the 10 a month max tariff remove the cap? It is sometimes unbearable to work at this speed now as I am used to a much faster connection.

I just got through to sky after a 40 minute wait on there 0870 number only for the guy at the other side of the word not to hear me and hang up the phone (I am on the skytalk package too!).

...I thought I might have more success finding out what's wrong here.

Get your IP details out of your post please, you do not want those on an open forum.

Re: download speed is always 40KB/s (320kb/s)

Is your router on the main socket? If so does your main socket have a split in it that goes left to right just above the screws holding the plate to the wall? I would say from those numbers you need to call 08442 410 515 and tell the agent your connection is slow.

Re: download speed is always 40KB/s (320kb/s)

Oh, err forgot to mention, this is my main socket (I think).

okay, okay, it looks bad and yes, that is an extension cable coming off it that then connects to the broadband splitter and then to the router and phone. But I have tried the modem connected directly to the socket and got EXACTLY the same speed, a steady max of exactly 40KB/s. Also, although seeing the exposed wires looks bad, does it really make a difference?

Re: download speed is always 40KB/s (320kb/s)

Can you get it directly onto the main socket (test socket if you have one) for testing? If so, change your filter, connect the router to the test socket, fire up the router and check your stats. If they stay the same call Sky tech on the 08442 number and go through slow speed troubleshooting, the ticket will then go to cst to look at the config on the router.
If you have to go on wireless to use the main socket/ test socket then don't worry too much as wireless will not stop the troubleshooting from being done.
