      Wildly fluctuating noise margin

Since 0830 this morning, my noise margin has started fluctuating suddenly between approx. 15db (stable) and a minus figure (instant line drop), then reconnection and a return to approx. 15db. I tried changing the filter but without effect. Is this the dreaded DLM, BT working somewhere or something else?

      TIA.

PS. This seems to be cycling approx. every 5 minutes. Infuriating

      No, it's not DLM.

Either, as you say, work going on at the exchange or on the line, or, more likely, a line/exchange fault. Unless you're plugged directly into your master, remember that "line" includes the phone wiring in your home and even then, a problem with an extension or a connected device can impact a master socket connection.

Try a master socket (or better still a test socket) connection with nothing else connected and see if the problem persists.

Am currently using the test socket as you suggested. I've had to keep the filter (new) connected otherwise my cable (supplied by Sky) doesn't have the correct plug. I've already had two line drops since connecting to the test socket.

If you are getting drops at the test socket then you need to call tech support. Do you have any noise etc on the line during calls at the moment in the test socket?

      Re: Wildly fluctuating noise margin

No noise detectable on voice. It now looks like my line has been capped (1696kbps) with a noise margin of 31.7db. I'm going to be away for a couple of days from tomorrow, so I'll probably hold off phoning tech support until I return.
BTW. My attenuation is 21db, so I ought to be able to connect at close to the maximum for my mid subscription.

May be a line issue between you and the exchange if its still happening in the test socket. When you get back call Sky Tech support and go through TS with them, before you call make sure you are in the test socket and tell them you have changed the filter before calling, will cut the call time down and get you to CST faster.

If you have one, you can use a standard dial up modem cable, not a permanent solution but it will rule out a faulty filter. I am inclined to agree though that it is an exchange or line fault. It is possible engineers are working in your exchange at the moment.
