Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

      Hi,

I have just got sky broadband, and I was expecting a faster speed, I have posted my stats below.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4889 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 7.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 13 db

I have turned the router off a couple of times now, and the connection speed does seem to be getting higher.

You are on ADSL2+ and should get 12-14 Mb. Your low noise margin indicates that your line is syncing almost as fast as it can. This usually means you have wiring problems. Plug the router directly into the Test socket and check your stats there and post back.

Re: Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

Have a look at the wiring to your extensions that are connected to the back of the faceplate.
You should only have connections to pins 2 and 5. If any other wires are connected carefully remove them.
Then at your extensions unscrew the faceplates and remove the other ends of those wires.
Pop your faceplate back on the master and try again.

      This explains a bit more:

DSL ZoneUK - Improve your speed - Extension wiring and Disconnection help

PS You need an ADSL filter fitted to each used extension including your Sky Box/Burglar alarm.

You may also wish to consider a Filtered faceplate like the one from ADSL Nation.

      What am I to do?
First lift the corners of your mouth and do this

Where you have extensions, you cannot beat using an ADSL filtered faceplate on the Master socket and plugging your router directly into it. Follow Penrhyn's advice first and see how you get on

Re: Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

Just as you said that i remembered that I was one adsl filter short, and remove the phone that didn't have one

      I am now getting

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 11420 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 30 db 7.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 14 db

However this is not as good as the test socket obviously.

I am and ex-virgin customer and bt came a few weeks ago and reconnected everything. I was looking in the phone socket and there are leads in the other numbers as well, however I am slightly worried about taken it off as the tech had some sort of clicker, and I have nothing to put them back should it cause a problem. He did something on joining the sockets so it joined up with our old virgin socket, so slightly worried if this will cause a problem as well.

Re: Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

If you remove the wires from terminal 3 on the back of the Master socket faceplate this may be enough. This is the ring wire which causes the problems, any other extra ones should not effect it.

Re: Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

Still slightly worried though, how would i go about putting it back? Is the ring wire the thing that makes it ring, so would the phones stop ringing? and would I need to do that for every socket or just the master?
