The ring wire is something that was needed on the old style phones and isn't as important these days, if you remove it from the master socket end that is all you should need to do.

Don't worry Dan, all you need to do is go to the master socket and remove any wires connected to "3" As you have filters on all your phones they will be fine. There is no need to remove any other wires, from the master or any other socket.

Re: Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

Removing it from the Master 'breaks' the circuit so that should be sufficient. You can get the wires back in with a very thin knife, but as long as you do not remove them from terminals 2 and 5 you should not need to put it back. This wire is only required for very old phones and even then, if you are using a filter, this does the same job.

I think the "clicker" you're referring to is actually called an IDC TOOL.

If you need to put any wires back, DON'T use a screwdriver or anything similar!

You can buy cheap IDC tools from most electrical stores (only about 99p for a cheap plastic one). The best ones are a bit more expensive and last a lot longer, these have little cutters that cut the wire after it has been "clicked" into the IDC terminal.
You can buy the good ones on ebay for a few quid by the way (my local electricians wanted 14.99 for exactly the same one!).

Just google 'IDC tool' and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Re: Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

How To Get Every Last Bit Of Performance That You Line Can Provide.

      (1) Get a filter faceplate (Run-it-direct provide the excellent BT one and offer a discount to forum members as well)

      (2) Put your router as close to the master socket as possible and connect to the filter faceplate with a short cable.

      (3) Connect router to PC by cable or mains adaptor. Use wireless only as a last resort.

Re: Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

Your stats have got worse actually, with a noise margin of 2 dbs, your connection is almost at the point of dropping.

As suggested earlier, get an ADSL Nation faceplate plug your router into it and if it is too far from your PC use an RJ45, to connect to your PC or an RJ11 to move your router closer to your PC.

Re: Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

I reconnected and the noise margin is better now

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 11010 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 30 db 7.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 15 db

With the faceplate are you talking about this for the extension or master?

Re: Just got sky broadband, was expecting faster speed

The face plate is for the master socket.

It means unscrewing the little plate that you have already had off of the master socket, disconnecting the 2 and 5 on the face plate you have just now and attaching it to the new ADSL face plate.

Warning though. This filters all extensions so you cannot run your router off of any the extensions, you will have to run it off of the main box or run another cable to an extention dedicated to the ADSL connection.

The key here is to split the voice and broadband at the entry to the house rather than at each extension socket.

Remember to get yourself an IDC insertion tool when you order your face plate. Don't worry it is really easy to do.
