      Suddenly, Internet is Amber, Intermittently

I've had no issues at all from my Sky broadban for nearly a year. In the first week or so it took one or two resets to establish a speed that was stable during busy times of the day, a simple matter of a couple of restarts when traffic was heaviest.

A coupl eof weeks ago, I woke up and found that the Internet indicator on the router was solid amber, no amount of restarts did anything. I was about to phone the helpline when it burst back into life. I assumed it had been a fault somewhere - perhaps at the exchange - that had been fixed.

Since then, I have had three occasions when suddenly internet access will suddenly become very slow (usually, right in the middle of a 25-man raid in World of Warcraft, as tonight, when I died just as the boss was going to). Restarting the router results in the usual Internet indicator flashing amber - but then it stays amber. This then clears to green in anywhere from 30 seconds to two or three minutes.

As I say, this suddenly seems to be a problem that has arisen out of nowhere.

      Any ideas?

To rule out problems with your internal wiring you must plug in to the Test socket. Extensions can and do develop faults which can cause drop outs, it is better to rule this out before going any further.

It may help if you post your detailed router stats from your normal position, then from the Test socket after running for a few hours. From your join date, I am assuming you have a V1 router.

Re: Suddenly, Internet is Amber, Intermittently

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no chance of my using the test socket. The person I live with suffers from Alzheimer's and would not understand the need for it or tolerate it.

I can't see why this should suddenly happen after a year of faultless service, nor why it would be intermittent.

It happened just now, but curiously, running the "Sky Test" seemed to prod the stupid thing back into life.

By stats do you mean these

Re: Suddenly, Internet is Amber, Intermittently

If you cannot even use the test socket for a short period of time you will have problems if you call tier 1 as its a test that is required to check where the fault lies. If BT go out to you and its internal wiring to blame you can end up being charged.
If could be an issue skys side of things but it also could be a socket that has developed a fault, a socket thats degraded or got dirt in it etc.

Re: Suddenly, Internet is Amber, Intermittently

As I said, this is not possible. The person I live with would be far too distressed at the sight of me "interfering with the wiring".

Is there anything particularly alarming about the stats I posted?

I suspect I am going to have to put up with the situation.

Does the person have any day centre they go to (I am thinking to give you chance to hoover up, do the washing etc) could you not have a go at the test socket then?

without ruling out the internal wiring being at fault there's no point calling Sky. They'll tell you the same thing...
