The difference is that illegal file sharing via the internet involves many tens of thousands, maybe millions, what you mention only involved a few friends sharing amongst themselves which did not impact much on the music economy. If you are willing to accept the consequences of being caught, that is up to you, but don't expect any sympathy from others who stick to the Law.

Re: Sky Crackdown illegal downloads help

I think most people have broken a law, knowingly or unknowingly.

The difference is, some people do knowingly download illegal files. Whilst this announcement is good for the Artists etc we all know that it isn't going to stop piracy. Just like prison sentences won't stop crime.

People will now know the consequences, and then they can take the risk themselves as to getting caught or not. And if they do get caught, well imho that's their problem.

At least something is now being done to help educate right from wrong.

tbh The only people that this will affect, is those who do download illegal content, and I would almost guarantee that it is only those people that are up in arms about it, and that they themselves, don't agree with the moves to help combat illegal filesharing.

If you deliberately played upon this recent crackdown on File Sharing to get yourself disconnected could you end your contract early or would it result in no connection with you still paying? Just a thought.

If they (Sky) terminate your service then you would no longer be liable for any charges. Contracts work both ways.

Excellent. A nice one to have in the back pocket.

Re: Sky Crackdown illegal downloads help

What we don't know is how many people will be targetted by any ISP during this MOU

But statistically, I bet a huge percentage of people do actually download or share files over the internet. It wouldn't be in any ISP's interest to lose their customers because of this. Hence the warning letters and the trying to get the message across.

However, the chances of getting caught, as said previously is still very low, but higher than it was before. But that still doesn't make it OK to do it.

Re: Sky Crackdown illegal downloads help

I would be astounded if anyone were to lose their internet service over this, with only 6 ISP's signing up to this initiative it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that there will still be plenty of other providers to choose from should the current service be withdrawn.
