Remove everything from the line if possible for testing, (if you have a visible split running left to right on your main socket just above the fixing screws you have a hidden test socket and plugging into this would be ideal) and then plug your router in to the main socket with a filter, power it up, once synched check in your router settings page for the synch speed and see if it has changed.

You either have DLM running on your line or you have been manually capped. A noise margin of 21.1 means you could theoretically connect at about 8Mbps. As even this is low for your attenuation, if following Paul's advice does not improve your speed, phone Sky ask if you are on DLM training, if you are, ask how long it has to run and wait it out. If you are not go through the trouble-shooting for a slow connection. With a good line you should be able to connect at 12-14 Mbps.

Please also understand that using wireless you will never get anything like the full speed the line is capable of, do all your checking with a wired connection. When your speed is sorted then you can concentrate on improving the wireless speed.

I've now got it connected wired to the MAIN telephone socket and it's not made the slightest difference. Speeds exactly the same on wired and wireless connections. Its been connected to the main socket for about 15 minutes. Will waiting make any difference or should it be instant?

I will contact sky and ask if we are on DLM training, although this problem has been occuring for several weeks/months so I'm not holding my breath that this is a temporary glitch!

If you are capped you will see no difference in the speed. However if you wiring is faulty you will see an immediate rise in the noise margin as soon as the sync to the exchange is made..What is the difference in noise margin?

Down is 20.6 and up is 26.5 so practically no change.

Why would it be capped? Surely if we're on the 16mb service any cap should not be before 16mb?

This is getting really frustrating now, don't know what else to try! Really appreciate you trying to help though - do you have any further suggestions other than calling sky and asking if we are on DLM?

Sky do not normally cap you unless you call complaining about an unstable line. I have heard mention of something called auto-regrade, but it is a Sky secret so I don't know anything about it. DLM normally jumps the speed around so it may not be that.

I am afraid there is nothing more that can be done outside the Sky CST. They are the only ones who can lift the cap and improve your speed.
