SAGEM DSL requires a username/password pop-up box error

I hope someone can advise me please...

I have a SAGEM router & am connected wirelessly.

Sometimes, when I try to open an IE window, I get a pop-up box saying:

The server 'website address e.g. google.co.uk' at DSL Router requires a username and password.

Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)."

I have tried my sky login details, and also admin/sky combinations. Whatever I type in, the box pops up time and time again. If I get rid of the box, the window turns black and shows '401 Unauthorized Authorization Required' in red writing.

This problem is intermittant but is driving me crazy.

I would be so grateful if anyone could help me out?

      many thanks

Re: SAGEM DSL requires a username/password pop-up box error

      Hi,
This happens when your line drops. Next time it happens check that the adsl light on the router has gone from green to orange (indicating that the line has dropped).

There's no point trying to use the internet until the line syncs back up and the adsl light has gone back to green. This should only take a couple of minutes.

The line tends to drop when the noise margin falls too low. When the line syncs it will typically be around 7dB. After a while this may start to fall (particularly late in the evening) and your line will drop if it reaches about 4-5db.

You will need to investigate why the noise margin falls. This can be due to poor internal wiring of extensions, faulty filters, interference from appliances (particularly cordless phones if they are near the router) etc.

Regarding the username and password these should simply be Admin and Sky (unless you have changed the password). If you enter these you should be able to check the line stats (Noise margin, attenuation etc) from the internal setup pages of the router.

One last point. Sometimes you can't connect to the internet even though the line hasn't dropped (ie no pop up prompt and the adsl light is green). In this case the problem lies between your wireless pc and the router. This is often easily fixed by right clicking the wireless icon near the clock and scrolling down to repair in the pop up sub menu.

      Hope that helps

If that is the case why do you not receive the standard "network unavailable, please check connection" messages, surely the configuration of the router must be at fault. I could understand if I was connected wirelessly (which I don't) and was accessing the router admin pages and lost connection why I would be asked to reauthenticate but for general web browsing it doesn't make sense.

Re: SAGEM DSL requires a username/password pop-up box error

Its an issue with the way the firmware behaves we think, if it loses contact with the authentication servers it looks elsewhere for authentication which is why the pop up window occurs. Doesn't happen with the V1 netgear just the V2 routers.

I had my sagem replaced because of this problem. Sky sent me a netgear but as mentioned my line kept on dropping which was probably the cause of the sagem router asking for authentication.
When I checked, the downstream noise margin was dropping as far as 0 db. I cured this by removing the bell wire from all the extension sockets around the house.

I rang Sky about this and they said it's a problem with the anti virus unless that was just a cop out!

I'm surprised they didn't tell you the real reason - it's well documented as a 'feature' of the Sagem...doesn't happen with the Netgears though...

this is an old thread, and this DOESN'T happen with the Netgear - the Sagem does it when it's lost sync...

Can't follow your reasoning here, if the connection is dropping and the box asking for the username and password comes up, then it is not working perfectly. You have a problem somewhere.

I have had a DG834GT for over 2 years now and have never experienced this. The only time I see this box is when I go to 192.168.0.1.
