Will an extension line make a big difference?

      Hello,

I am an ADSL noob and moving from virgin media to sky broadband, including moving phone lines. I have bt coming to install the line at the end of this month, however I doublt they will install the master socket in the ideal place where i need it. We have an extension going up stairs, however would this make a great difference in speed comparing to the master socket?

Once I get all setup I will have to post my router stats to see the best connection I can get.

Extensions are not very good for BB. It's always ideal to run from the master socket. Can i ask how the telephone lines are connected? Are they overhead (to pole) or underground?

Depends on the line quality coming in and how good the extension is. It is always better to connect the router to the master socket and then run an network cable to the PC or use Homeplugs and connect to any mains socket (this is what I do)

Agreed, an alternative is a hardwired extension using cat5e cable, which is effectively the same as using a long ethernet cable, but you get the benefit of having the router next to the pc.

I have an extension line running from the mater socket downstairs. the line is 25 metres long. I have no problems whatsoever.

Except that Im getting 0.3m d/l and 0.2m u/l speeds from DLM.

How do you know? Have you compaired you stats from the master and the extension?

If your line quality is good enough and your extension is correctly installed then you may not see any degrade. That does not mean that everyone wont, lots of posts here show poor results from extensions.

Re: Will an extension line make a big difference?

I use an xte 2005 filtered faceplate and an extension going to my computer upstairs and i get the same stats as being connected to the master socket itself and i have no problems with this setup.

Re: Will an extension line make a big difference?

There is always exceptions to every rule, but as a general guide, it is better to avoid extension leads if you can and put the router near the master/faceplate filter. I fully understand that this is not possible for a lot of people, and an extension may be needed.

Re: Will an extension line make a big difference?

I can understand that Brain69, but in my case it works fine, so i don't mess with it and i am happy that it works just as good as being connected to the master socket, because i don't have a choice but to use an extension, must be a good extension or something.
