XP - Comodo Firewall and Comodo AntiVirus and Comodo Anti Malware
Vista - Avast antivirus, PC Tools Free Firewall and MS Defender anti-malware

In the end it comes down to what is stable with your particular computer. Yours may well be different to mine and other peoples. So try a few until you are happy but remember to Uninstall anti-virus products before installing another one, otherwise you will have problems!
I'm using XP so will consider your recommendations, could I ask what you mean by 'I did use AVG until they upgraded to v8 and that has serious problems on flooding the Internet with unwanted data'?

Take a look at Free AVG software updated to tackle web overload News - PC Advisor it explains pretty well. Basically AVG 8 was scanning everything on a page before you even clicked on any item so it was generating a lot of unwanted traffic. The 'fix' will only scan the item you select so reducing the heavy traffic demands, or so they claim!
