      My Parents Internet??

Any ideas if there is anything I can do to improve my parents internet connection?

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 384 kbps 409 kbps
Line Attenuation 61.5 db 38.9 db
Noise Margin 7.5 db 12.5 db

I got these stats by connecting the router alone directly (but via filter) to the main BT socket. However this socket is much smaller than the usual BT socket, and the face plate does not split into two.
As I live just a 2minute walk from my parents, I would expect these speeds to be something simular to mine..
I (at my home) are able to connect at 3775+ @ 60db.

Any smallest bit of advice would be much appreciecated.
      Thanks in advance..

      Hi

One thing you could try if you are confident is to disconnect the ring wire in the socket.

Normally in the socket, there are:

      Pin 2 - White / Blue
      Pin 5 - Blue / White

Pin 3 - Orange - this is the ring wire.

Also, do you know if they were ever connected at a higher speed? They could be going through DLM possibly.

Saying that, I am not too sure what speed you should expect to see, as the Line Attenuation 61.5 db is quite high. Probably about 2000kbs ish. Probably a little higher, will leave for others to confirm.

WoW, Thanks for a speedy reply!

I live a 2 minute walk from my parents, and have line attenuation of 60db and connect about 3700kpbs, so im expecting somthing simular.

May be another day, I will try disconect the ring if ya think it may help,

Not sure if they have ever had better stats, but I can confirm its always been slow. Also over 10 years ago, when only dial up was available, and I had my own bedroom here, I had a second line installed, as I was always tying up the phone line with dialup. The engineer did somthing internal when installing the second line, nothing was done to the cable coming to the house.
Also this second line is no longer in use..

      Re: My Parents Internet??

It is to the best of my knowlage, that they do not have a ring wire, because they only have the master sockets(no extensions). I say socketS, because of the second master socket in the bedroom of which I had installed many many years ago.
This second socket is no longer being used, as they no longer pay the line rental on it..

Am I correct? should they have a ring wire?
Would Sky be able to help us with this problem?
Because their upload speed is faster than the download speed!

      Re: My Parents Internet??

You will need to make sure the internal wiring is as good as possible, if there is a test socket avail use that for testing and if the SNR is better call Sky tech support and see if the speed can be tweaked a bit by CST but if it's a line length issue you can only get what the line can handle.

      Re: My Parents Internet??

You say that when you had 2 lines, there was still only the one cable coming into the house?

This to me suggests that the BT guy appears to have put 2 voice line in the one cable?? - not really sure how? -but if somay well be why the broadband signal is so poor!

As with Newsreader's advice in post#2, you only need terminals 2 & 5 connected on the main socket - you should disconnect any other wires that maybe attached to 1, 3, 4 or 6.

if there is nothing attached to the old extension that you had installed in your room and it's dead anyway, you should/could remove this too.

Also, to which socket is the Sky viewing box attached to? and does this have a filter connected?

      Re: My Parents Internet??

BT drop cable is normally 4-core maybe even 6-core now
so multiple lines down one cable is perfectly normal

The op needs to find the cable entry point and see if
theres a junction box that then breaks off to feed the two
      master sockets

Ideally if the op is confident enough they should replace the
the old setup with a new NTE5 master socket at the
first termination point of the BT cable entry, its not hard just
find the live cable pairs and connect to A and B on the NTE5

(Technically this work should be done by BT but it will cost abit)

you should sync around 2mb at least if you can get rid of the
noise thats currently on the line.

The cable comes into the hall to a brown BT junction box, which splits to the 2 main master sockets(hall & bedroom). The bedroom socket is no longer active (phone is dead when pluged in here).

The sky is connected through an extension socket via a filter. However for the above stats, the router alone was connected to the master socket via a filter. Everything else was disconected.

Maybe I will have to break BT's T&C's, and check and remove BT's wires from the brown junction box. Im pertty confident with wires, im just not quite sure what they did when they split the line.
