      Line deterioration or dlm issue?

      Hi everyone.

Due to severe line length early last year my connection was capped, then capped again and again to eventually get me a constant speed of 256k. I was moved from ADSL2 and put onto GTMD (canít remember the exact term as Iím at work) - I still occasionally had to re-sync but was happy that Iíd a speed faster than dial up, most in my village donít.

For the past 4 weeks though, my connection has become very unstable and drops constantly. Iíve carried out the requisite tests using test sockets, taking connections out of the equation etc.. I plan to purchase a replacement ADSL faceplate from ADSL nation.

My question is though - Does anyone know whether the DLM issues will affect people on GTMD or does this just affect those on ADSL2? I am reluctant to contact CS as I do not want them to simply say ďsorry but your line does not now support BBĒ.

      Thanks

      Mark

From your description of your line it would certainly be a candidate for DLM - the fact you were/are on G.DMT makes no difference.

When you get home, get your current router sync stats (nm, sync, attenuation) and post them here. They may well give a clue as to whether you're in DLM or not or if there's another issue.

      Saturday,

Just got back from work. Have a look at my stats please and see if you can see any other problems apart from that due to line length.

Do you think my connection is being DLM'd, which is leading to an even worse intermittent service ?

Re: Line deterioration or dlm issue?

256/256 isn't an obvious DLM figure but that doesn't mean for sure that you're not on DLM.

What is obvious, as you've already said, is that Sky have capped you (DLM or manually). This has given you a very generous noise margin (12.5db) but your error levels are still high by an order of magnitude of at least 100x what you'd hope for with such a high noise margin.

You already know you have a long, poor quality line and that you were/are capped. Whether the additional loss of stability is down to DLM isn't immediately obvious in your stats. Sorry.

I can't see any harm in calling Sky to see if you're on DLM though there's not a lot you could do with that info.

On a side note, you mentioned earlier that you were going to fit an ADSL faceplate. Almost certainly a good idea but have you run a comparison with your test socket? Whatever you get with that is all you'd get with a faceplate. If you haven't tried it, run the comparison. As you're capped you're looking for an increase in your noise margin.

Re: Line deterioration or dlm issue?

thanks Saturday, I'll carry out a comparison between the two a bit later.

Still think I'll purchase a faceplate though as from what I've read they help. Also it'll stop my filter being such a magnet for the kids to stand on and kick!

      Have a good un.
