      Low Downstream speed?

      Hi,

I recently got sky broadband Max, but I'm only connecting at 7.5-8Mb.

It says my line attenuation is 44 db, and the noise margin is 7.8db. I realise from reading these forums the last couple of days, that the line attenuation is quite high. Is this something that I can get down myself? Or is it solely dependant on the distance from the exchange?

Also, noise margin..? same questions really.

      Thanks in advance,
      Lee

      Re: Low Downstream speed?

You could possibly improve your attenuation by a db or two if your wiring is poor, but basically, it's the line length that counts.

For an explanation of noise margin etc, see the first sticky in my signature. It's slightly out of date now but the principles are still true.

Ah ok. In which case, I might as well see if I can downgrade my bb to the Mid package - if i'm only gonna be getting 8mb out of it.

      Thanks for the help.

You would need a technical reason to downgrade to be honest, the thing to remember is that Mid has a download limit that max does not have.

      Re: Low Downstream speed?

Hi Saturday, my exchange has finally upgraded (Ashford Kent). My downstream has improved but the upstream has gone down slightly. I'm happy with my Mid package but am I greedy to expect more? I seem to lose a lot after looking at the speed tests. I've done the faceplate stuff and all the tweaks, but do I need to redo the TCP Optimisation thing?

      Stats:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6816 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 27.0 db
Noise Margin 7.0 db 14.0 db

      Skyuser speed test:
      You are with Sky
Your download speed is 5104Kbps. That is 881Kbps above the average for Sky
Your upload speed is 307Kbps. That is 87Kbps below the average for Sky
Your download speed is 5104Kbps. That is 1153Kbps above the average for your package
Your upload speed is 307Kbps. That is 3Kbps above the average for your package

      Re: Low Downstream speed?

Your downstream sync is pretty good for your attenuation so I doubt you could improve much on it. The upstream is generally set a little lower on LLU than on Connect.

Your speedtest results (download) are about half a meg under what you'd expect for the sync - is that wired or wireless? If the latter, then that's probably the problem.

Yes, run TCPOptimizer again and set it at 8meg.

Hi there Saturday, I've run the Optimiser here are the stats

The MTU still suggests 1500 setting, does that seem right?
