      Differences in broadband products

I have sky broadband (Max) but currently only recieve the 8mb speed due to, i am informed, my local exchange being only able to support that much data. I'm quite happy with this arrangement as it allows me to have unlimited downloads.

My question is what is limiting my line to 8mb? My neighbour, who uses the O2 broadband product connects at 13mb and speed tests at around 11mb. We both are on the same exchange and are connected to our master sockets. I connect at about 5.5 mb and speed test at about 4.5 mb. Are O2 using a different technology to Sky? If they are can we expect Sky to move to this new technology? I understand about line quality but how is it that they are getting above the apparent limit?

Again this is not a compliant as I am more than happy with the service and product. I'm just curious as to how my neighbour gets more than me. Any information would be gratefully recieved.

      Great forum BTW

      Re: Differences in broadband products

post your router stats and we can see what your max connection could be (according to your attenuation), your neigbour's line may be run differently to yours or you may have a problem with your internal wiring.

your stats will give us a better idea of what you may or may not be able to get

(note: you could also post some comparison stats form the test socket, see first link in my sig)

      Re: Differences in broadband products

are these stats from the test socket (behind the face plate of master socket)

your attenuation should give you a better speed (but you are not even syncing at the max for GDMT)

post back the stats form the test socket and we can move on

      Re: Differences in broadband products

Yes these stats are from the test socket.

Your comment about not syncing at the max has got me thinking about when I first went over to sky. I had problems where the speed would grind to a halt and the connection would be lost. I phoned sky and they told me that there were alot of errors on the line. They said that the line could not support more 8mb and I seem to remember that they reduced me down to the 8mb package but left me with the unlimited download (not a problem). It did solve the issue. I apologise as I forgot that this happened.

From what you say, if i am reading it correctly, the line can support greater speeds. If that is the case then I will contact sky and see if they have resolved this issue and can up the connection speed.

Thanks for your help and the gentle reminder ;-)

      Re: Differences in broadband products

It will only take better speed if the errors are gone, you are not seeing errors at your current synch due to the cap.

      Re: Differences in broadband products

Make sure when you call them that you are in the test socket with a new filter if possible (Sky send 3 with the router). They can then see what the router is syching at on the test socket and will tell you what to expect from the line.

      Re: Differences in broadband products

you may also want to do a quiet line test (cannot remember the number at the moment, if you do a search on this site there is the number and info)

with you attenuation you should get the same if not better than your friend, but looks like a problem somewhere between you and the exchange is giving you problems)
