      Please help with my connection speed!!!

      Hi,

      I have been having problems with my connection speed for the last 6 weeks. I have spoken to Sky on countless occasions and have been told various things by them.

      1) Noise on the line and it will clear in 2 days.
      2) BT engineer will call in the next 2 days (never did).
      3) There is something wrong at the exchange and will log a fault with BT. (my speed went up to 848kb for 2 days).
      4) They cannot do anything to my line for the next 10 days due to DLM testing.

      My current stats are as below.

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 172 kbps 409 kbps
      Line Attenuation 53.5 db 36.2 db
      Noise Margin 6.9 db 12.0 db

      Can anyone please suggest what I can do next?

      Looking at your NM and connection speed, you have very serious line problems. With a bit of luck, most of the problem will be with your internal wiring, which is usually easy enough to fix.

      First locate your master socket, which is usually the first box on the line into your house. If it has a horizontal split across the face(NTE5), remove the 2 screws holding on the faceplate and ease it off. You will find a Test socket behind the plate, plug a filter, then the router into this and take your stats. Post your stats here for more help.

      If you do not have an NTE5, unplug everything from all your other extensions and plug a filter and the router into the Master socket, take your router stats from there and post back.

      Are you connecting wired or wireless?

      Have you tried connecting wired to the test socket located behind the faceplate on your master socket as recommended by Isitme above?

      Suggest you also go to Mel's Notes: Dg834gt-1skuk
      and then run the Detailed Stats utility and copy and paste the results back here so someone can try to help you.

      Thanks for your quick replies.

      I have been using the test socket for weeks now, can't be bothered to keep unscrewing the cover every time I call Sky.

      I'm using a wireless connection with just one telephone socket in the house. I have just replaced the microfilter and the stats are as below.

      Noise Margin 7.1 db 11.5 db

      To be honest I think Sky agents are using this as a useful 'fob off'. His connection speed is very low if it were DLM, I would expect to see a much higher NM, although the upload seems to indicate it.

      Edit -Could the OP confirm his package and router type?

      Edit - I have just seen your latest stats and they are not much improvement. Can you do a quiet line test, plug a corded phone into the Test socket and dial 17070, option 2 and see if there is noise on your line.

      He has an upstream of 412/409, though it seems like an issue at the exchange/line.
