Whatever they did at the exchange made no differance. Just had another engineer at the house, checked the master socket with his kit and indeed found that the phone caused the router to disconnect. Having explained the saga to him, he said he would go off to the exchange and also call a couple of people at BT to see what can be done next. He said I would hear back from BT.

He has just pulled away......I wonder what will come of it all...

By the way..Line connection 5120kbps, line att 36db, noise margin 17.6

Weird, if BT engineers are scratching their heads its not a good sign.

Another update, engineer popped back and did some work outside (he recrimped and put in a new thing and recrimped something else - sorry for the appalling lack of tech speak!). Then he said he was popping back to the exchange.

So far, so good, my noise margin is at now 12 dbs, and using the phone reduces it to 7db but no disconnections....is this it solved? I hope so!

Re: Slow speeds since connecting to sky.

Yet another update. Shy have removed the cap from my line, so now it connects at 7168kbps, and the noise margin has dropped to 7.3db. But once again the phone is disconnecting the router. I have emailed them, as they had closed this thinking BT had fixed the line. Clearly the high noise of margin of before was masking the fault.

Anyone any ideas what is wrong? I have had a grand total of three engineers on this, Should I persue this, or should I ask sky to cap my line so that the noise margin is higher? Is this a viable solution or should I be looking for it to be properly fixed?

This is driving me slowly insane......help please!

Needs to be properly fixed. Point out to sky how long its been going on, how many times you have had to chase it etc and ask for escalation so that it is looked at properly and resolved as much as possible. Yes a cap will help stabilise the connection but why should you be capped if an underlying fault is there?

Re: Slow speeds since connecting to sky.

      Hopefully the last update!

A further two engineers attended the house. They both found a further fault in the street cabinet which was fixed, but agreed the fault was a 'high resistance' fault in the underground cabling at the front of the house, possibly further along up the road. Before trying, with no hope at all, to get BT to dig up the road yesterdays engineer did some fancy wiring to my master socket, coming out into a little white box underneath the master socket and fitted an adsl filtered faceplate (for his piece of mind he said). So far it works......

As an aside, both the BT engineer and sky have said except for that one fault the line is in a great state with few if any errors. Should be good, every bit of it has been checked, fixed, replaced etc etc

coming out into a little white box underneath the master socket
Could it be BT's famous iPlate? Although I thought this plugged straight into the Master socket.

Re: Slow speeds since connecting to sky.

My experience of Sky has been good, a line with a fault that is beyond their control and they have sent a total of five BT Engineers in one month, one of which spent over fours with me and found a 'fix'. I am happy with my speed, and can now via skytalk call technical support for free. All that for a fiver a month! (used to pay 35 a month, so for a 30 saving even I can endure Tier 1). The DLM thing is a real shame....I have my fingers crossed for the future......
