Well, I didn't get my call back, so I called them again. The adviser said that the BT Escalations team are very busy and havent actually looked at my case! He reckoned based on his experience it would be Friday before they got to it at the earliest. Once again I was told that it seems to be an exchange fault...and may take five days to sort out ......

Re: Slow speeds since connecting to sky.

The BT engineer attended today, and found corroded pins at the street cabinet.

Now that he has repaired the fault, my line stats are:

      upstream
      Connection speed 4096kbps
      Line attenuation 36db
      Noise Margin 20db

Phone calls no longer disconnect the router which is the most important thing, however I am concerned that the noise margin is a little too high. I have mailed sky and await their response......

obvioiusly you were capped due to the issues so hopefully a quick call to CST will get it lifted...don't hold too much hope on the email getting it sorted to your satisfaction

Don't worry about that, it is a good sign, it just means that you are heavily capped due to the previous line faults. Call Sky again, get through to CST and explain you were capped previously for a fault on the phone line which has now been fixed. With a bit of luck and a sensible agent you should get the cap lifted and see your speed rise to the maximum your package allows.

Re: Slow speeds since connecting to sky.

I'll just post here to avoid making a new thread.

I've just had my broadband switched on today, I signed up for the 16mb package to avoid download limits, but I knew I wasn't going to get 16mb download speeds.

The problem is, I've moved into a new house, and Sky said the line appears to be 512kbps, but they later changed their mind and said that was set as a sort of default speed, and that they didn't know how fast it would be until they switched it on. I've done numerous speed checks and they're all around the 500kbps mark.

My question is... will this be my broadband speed for good, or is there a way of speeding it up? I play my xbox online and use torrents quite a lot, so 512kb really isn't anywhere near what I want.

really need to start your own thread rather then hi-jack someone elses as you'll get more responses...so much info you're left out too...

Re: Slow speeds since connecting to sky.

I was trying to avoid making another thread that could be answered with one or two posts... I guess this forum works the opposite way from any other I've seen.

Do I just need full test stats etc? I've read all this stuff here about line attenuation and noise margins etc, but I really don't understand most of it. I'm not really an expert as you can see. I'll just start a new thread.

Re: Slow speeds since connecting to sky.

Update: sky called me, at this point my line was synching at 6 meg then they dropped my noise margin...my connection was still at 6meg, but after that phone calls once again disconnected the router. Another call to sky, and I was put through to the escalations team, they are sending an engineer straight to the exchange tomorrow morning on an emergency order to carry out a 'shift and lift'. They see no point in sending anyone to the house as that has been cleared of any issues.

I have to say I am happy with the speed I am getting, and that the solutions and escalations people seem very switched on and helpful - you guys have been wonderful encouraging me to persue this, if not for your advice I would not be this far along....

Re: Slow speeds since connecting to sky.

lift and shift applies to Connect only, tie pair shift is for LLUs...and i doubt it'll get done as an 'emergency' - doesn't work like that. they'll ask BT to do it as soon as possible but end of the day you're in the hands of BT...good luck though
