Local Adverts Served Up On Sites

Cant say I have noticed this before - perhaps it has always been a feature?

I notice that the odd web site I go to these days has targetted adverts for my local area.

I know that the browser header can be read for info such as the ip address, browser type and OS.

Does Sky have local IP addresses so advertisers know you are from a general area so can serve up targeted adverts?

      Cheers

      Hi

The sites you are going on will be using IP location, therefore making the ads more relevant to your area. Nothing really to worry about.

Re: Local Adverts Served Up On Sites

Any website you visit can log your IP address and can tell from your address who your ISP is and roughly where it terminates your connection. It doesn't tell anyone exactly where you are. For example my work network terminates in Docklands but my office is in Surrey.

try this website: What is my IP address? Show my IP address. IP Tracer & IP Locator. to see what "they" can tell about where you are browsing from.

Is it possible to stop Adserve, gaming channels etc just popping up when I am trying to the browse the web or deal with emails. I don't remember this being a problem in the past but now I can't seem to block them

You may have a trojan, nothing should just pop up. Download and run SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware! and Ad-Aware 2008 Free - Lavasoft These will remove almost all nasties.

Using Firefox with Adblock+ will stop almost all adverts from appearing.

Have you installed a new 'search bar' recently? Many of these are scams and if you do agree to install it your security will not stop it. Often the fact that you are accepting a 'search bar' is often hidden in the small print of some free software.
